Just got my new build in, and the 5870 vid card wont fit in my favorite case!

The coolermaster storm scout..

Need to run to microcenter to get a new case. What would you guys suggest thats not over priced, but will easily hold the 5870?

Will a storm sniper fit it?

thanks

I'm in love with my Antec 1200. Great cooling, and enough room for any videocard on the market. I believe the 902 will also fit a 5870, and it's a mid-tower that is also a bit cheaper.

If you get any case with removable front bay or HDD cage around the PCI-E area, it should fit and with a lot of room left over. In my case, my good ol Armor case fits it well.

Yeah you'd think

I love the storm scout so much i made the 3.5 inch case removable by drilling it out!

Turns out after all that work i'm still screwed by a few millimeters as the last 5.25 bay still overlaps with teh first pci express slot. (the second slot on my mb isnt 16x :( )

yeah.. the 922 has a ton of room and is a very nice case... or the 932 if you want something taller.

PS: I bit on the deal in the post above about a month ago.. the case I got was immaculate and it shipped next day.. very happy!

yeah my 922 refurb is in perfect shape. can easily pass as brand new. i have a friend who runs a 5970 in his haf 922 and stull has about an inch to spare. case is great and solid.

great, just great.

Got teh new case, got everything installed, I get no video at all when the 5870 is in the case!

I've tried disabling the onboard vid, that doestn seem to help at all : /

with the 5870 in, not video is every displayed on its outputs or the onboard vid output.

Take it out, and it boots right up to the onboard. I've got both pci powers connected to the card, i've reseated it like 10 times. What am I missing?

Yep and I need the dust filters the Antec 1200 has. :)

Have you or can you try a different output on the card to connect to the monitor?

i've tried both dvi ports, nothing....

i dont have a hdmi or display port adatpter or monitor input?

Shouldnt more then one output on the card show you post info pre windows?

Yes you should see a POST screen while booting up.
Do the fans start up like it's powered but just no video output?

Correct, its def got power, fan spinning, expelling hot are out of the card/back of the case...

I dont know how long its been since I've cried... but i'm getting close.

I think I've read were people have let it sit and turned the monitor off then back on and get a signal.
New hardware and problems isn't fun. :(

no dice... just tried that for like 15 minutes. I even went and brought up the kitchen little tv to see if the hdmi out was working plugging it into that... no dice.

I've opened a ticket with xfx... anything else I can try? Maybe use the power adapters that came with the card instead of the straight pci e power leads?

You could try the adapter, but I doubt that would help. It would be another thing you can list as what you've attempted for the XFX ticket.

no dice on the power issue....

I did find a bios update for my asus board that listed says fixed cant recognize 5850 and 5870! I thought yes, this is it... there was one bios version newer then that change log, so i went for the newest.

still does work, and it wont let me flash the older version that says 5870 on it in ezflash because it says my current version is newer... I'm thinking maybe they broke it again on the new version?

Is it an offical BIOS or a beta?
Worth looking through their beta BIOS if you haven't already.

They are official bios, but the one with change notes about the ati cards is one version ago. Silly me I assumed the newest version would have all the cumulative fixes from previous versions regression tested, but if that is my issue (best guess right now) they didnt regress very well.

Now i'm trying to figure out how without a floppy disk or drive to make a usb boot disk from windows 7 so i can use the dos flash to flash the previous version to see what that does. (the bios flash and windows flash both check to ensure the flash file you pick to flash isnt older then your currrent version, I guess they dont believe in rollbacks)

NOT THE P180... Unless you don't mind removing the drive cage. Also my 5870 blocks off 4 of my 6 SATA ports :(

800d, I have at least 3 inches of space from the end of the card to the SATA backplane cover

My buddy has an Antec 900 and a 5870 and he said it fits if you have nothing in the drive bay aligned with it.
Antec 182 if you take out the drive bay.
Not sure about the antec 300 or 1200

can someone confirm this?
He said his case says it supports full length video cards but with a ruler the XFX 5870 is 1/2 inch longer than the so called full length.

make sure you plug ur screen into the dvi1 output. ive had problems with switching vid cards and until u select 2 screens in windows it still thinks u only have one, and sometimes doesnt autodetect the other dvi port. the other thing... what card did u have before? if its nvidia did u completely uninstall all the drivers? i would do that anyway as the new card may not like the old driver set u have installed. lastly...what psu do you have?

You probably just have a bad card. RMA it. Though I suggest you at least try to put the card in a different PC.

Try reseating the video card or putting it in a different PCIE slot if you have more than one. Also make sure that the power leads are secure. I believe you need an 8 pin and a 6 pin to power it properly.

thanks for all your suggestions, but i think i just got a $400 paperweight...

seems doa.

I had a friend bring over his rig today, and we swapped video cards, he has a 8800GTS. His card fired right up in my rig no problem, and my new 5870 was dead as a doorknob in his machine as well.

So two machines, all 4 pci-e slots tried, different power supplies, and all signs point to dead with no video no matter what we do.

Hopefully I'll get an RMA number and a quick replacement from XFX. Sucks plunking down 400 bones and then having to pay to ship back and sit on my hands while i wait for a working card i've already paid for :(

Oh well...

VJCSmoke - no 8 pin, just two 6s
