Cases and oversized video cards

When browsing around on newegg, what is the easiest way to tell if a full-size video card (such as an 8800gtx) will fit? My current plan is to look at the sideways pic that newegg almost always puts on and estimate by looking at the motherboard screw holes... this is, however, quite time consuming and not very accurate.

what case do you have?

A 8800gtx, 8800ultra, 9800gx2, and 9800gtx are all 10.5 inches long.

The 8800gt, 8800gts, and 9600gt are all 9 inches long, but have the pci-e connector coming from the back of the card rather then the top making it around 9.5inches

I realized that my case wouldnt fit a card that I wanted. I picked up a freakin huge Rocketfish(Lian Li) full tower case for $53 on clearence...don't ever have to worry about anythings size!

This is the very same thing I am looking at with the old (yet new looking) Thermaltake shark, I have done rough calculations of the card (10.51" according to one site) then the length of the case minus 3.5-3.8" (as the HDD bays in the shark face sideways, and it's under 1" shorter than my existing case) and you have a rough idea of how much space you have left. although it does depend on the positioning of the components inside the case say the HDD cage in a Antec (the one that has the cage/fan combo right where the 8800 would be) or a really cheap case could have a crappy layout.

Best bet is to go to a store that carries the case your after and measure from the PCI slot to where ever 10.5" gets you.

See, the problem is that I build PCs for just about everyone I know. As we're all getting older, the percentage of them that are buying high-end stuff is getting bigger. There are no stores near me that have very many cases to look at.

I personally use an Alienware Star Wars Edition case that I got off ebay, whatever chassis those are built off of, and I used an NZXT with that "hydraulic" front panel. For that case, I had to remove the HD caddy and mount the HD in the floppy drive area, which isn't a big deal, but I just want to avoid that kind of thing in the future; especially because return shipping to newegg would end up losing me about $40, plus the restock fees.
