Caseless?

Not exactly a case mod, but I figure that you guys would be the best to ask...

I have everything except the case for my new computer... and my case should get here in a week or so. I've put everything together to make sure that nothing is DOA, but I haven't had it turned on for any extended period of time. Is it at all safe to use a computer that's completely caseless?

Yes, if it's on somthing like cardboard that doesn't conduct electricity.

yes, but you dont wanna keep it like that for too long. cardboard wont shiled your components from electro-magnetic noise, or ground it for that matter.

You can leave it going for prolonged periods of time...just make sure that there is nothing
creates a short on the bottom of the motherboard and hard drives.

I've got my motherboard sitting on the box it came in, but I don't know what to do with the hard drive. I think I have a drive cage from an old case, would it be safe just to mount it in there?

You can put the HDD pretty much anywhere, as long it's either horizontal or vertical, and nothing is shorting out

You could put the hard drive in the box but if it is closed then it might get a little hot.

You really dont have to worry to much. Just lay the mobo the antistatic bag it came in, and you will be all set. You could put a piece of cardboard under that. Everything else you can pretty much put anywhere.

Wish I had a camera, but a store that I work at fixing/building computers we have a testbed computer for components and the motherboard is mounted on a piece of wood with the foam piece that comes with mobo's inbetween the wood and the mb

Now that is actually a stupid idea. The whole purpose of antistatic bags IS to be conductive, the silver colour isn't there for looks it is a thin metal film.

i agree. the bags only work when the parts are inside. even if they did protect from static on the bottom leads, if there's not enough humidity, static will build on the surface by itself and short out. i donno why people take these risks with ESD all the time with these expensive parts.you dont have a case? get a case. or mod some metal box and mount it in there. the parts need to be grounded, and shilded. only reason those plastic cases work is because the plastic is conductive enough to ground the parts. at least that's what the macs have.

Computers dont really need to be sheiled from electromagnetic fields, but they do make quite a lot and will make it tough to listen to the radio. My wireless keyboard also will not work at all near the computer when the lid is off.

Just remeber, some parts of the computer wont get any air to them sitting out in the open. Hard drives, chipset...
