That photo actually was taken at about 90% complete.... The last item was a 2" x 6" plexi panel I located under the optical drive; this contains the drive power, reset buttons as well as the various indicators for power, drive activity, etc.

EDIT -

I am now also running all the various cables through a conduit now to clean up the spaghetti that was hanging down.

Honestly IMO, it still looks like a pile of crap stuck to a wall. Just my humble opinion and that's what makes the world great. I have mine and others have theirs... But if you are bent on sticking parts to a wall, an interesting enclosure would do better in my opinion. Have at it...

. . and in MY opinion, it looks kind of cool, seems to get better ventilation (especially if he has a/c :D) and since all the parts are mounted to a single surface, that's pretty much a case, even if it doesn't enclose the parts, it does localize them to one area where they don't move. Im always open to new creative ways to do things, when i move out im thinking of doing a desk mod, just wire up the mobo and parts into the desk itself, and run an extra psu and fans through the desk for venitilation. Even if we all don't agree we should encourage creative modding, that IS what this forum is about, right?

I thought about doin' that once. Putting all the parts in a drawer and having easy access whenever I needed it.
 
i would probably only end up doing that for my fileserver though, because i always want my gaming rig to be mobile for LAN's and the like :D . But i think i will really go through with it once i move out and have the room and time to plan it out right.

Yes, you are hereby granted an exclusive license for a 'Wall Mounted Computing Device' :D I'm hardly the first person to have done this, but I tried to make mine appear a little more 'industrial' with the wiring and aluminum tubing. Also, although case lcd's are all the rage these days, I haven't seen anyone use a commercial scrolling sign display for system stats. If you follow the link I posted earlier there's a few more pics and a cheesey video showing the system in action (scoll down the page a bit).

Thanks! Beyond loving electronics as a hobby, I do IT for a medium sized furniture manufacturing company. We have several CNC mills and these daya almost every other piece of equipment has a controller of some sort. The wire used in my system is some really nice Teflon coated industrial wire from the ends of spools... Lost of colors and very shiny. With the exception of the mobo, I didn't use any molex connectors; I just soldered female terminals on the wire and heat-shrinked.

IMHO I thought it looked like a nice way to display your computer. Cases have come a long way from being an ugly white box but all in all they are still mundane boxes but now people put windows on the sides and some lights!!!!!

Regarding the original post, I think that's a very clever idea. It would be neat to try and clean it up a bit, maybe make it into a mobile or some kinetic art kind of thing.

Notice I said interesting enclosure. It doesnt have to be an "everybody has it" case. It can start from one, but be changed to be very unique or just hand built completely. To me sticking parts to a wall or stacking them on a desk is just blah. It's like a Honda Civic driving around without a hood to show off the engine. It just looks wrong. Sure some people like it, I give them that, but sometimes leaving the realm too much just doesnt make sense. It's just a stack of parts and very impractical. But hey, do what you like.

Really, I respect your opinion. Have no fear that I will sneak into your office and hang your pc on your wall :p To me, this kind of stuff is like art, and I do it for myself. I believe most modders feel the same. I have no more of an expectation for you or anyone else to appreciate this than I do for you to appreciate or understand Dali or Escher. Those that do, do; those that don't, don't. Leaving the realm is what it's all about.

However, I will say that having this system open like it is makes upgrades and maintenance much easier than working within a case, so in that regard I find it very practical.
 
The hanging one (not your's agent420), really does look like a crappy mobile. However, I am impressed that it actually works :D

Actually I wouldnt think that making changes to that board hanging on a wall any more easier than any modern designed good case. Most of my "cases" have screwless designs with a simple door and thumb press removable drive. But I see your point. Most of my practical statements are more along the lines of moving the computer and having less than 6-9 square feet of unused wall. The only thing I see out of a setup like that is to simply display the items, not much more. Again, dont take this as hate, just as not my style. I give props completely for doing it the way you want to. Doesnt matter what I think on your computer...

Yeah I definitly see your point. I was just trying to point out that as far as cases go there isnt much visual (please note that I said visual) difference between a generic cheap case and an expensive case. I just like seeing people do different things even if they are a little impracticle or even ugly to some people.

I think a hanging computer kinda reminds me of some people who have a big fern by their desk and thats why I think it's neat. Lots of things are impracticle but sometimes its worth it. If we all went for efficency we would just buy standard cases.
