i have an Aspire Xplorer case and well whenever i press the power button to turn it on it does so for about 1 sec then turns off......then everything lights up again about 3-4 sec later then nothing happens. Only after i go through the torture of hoping nothing gets fried can i turn the comp on because for some wierd reason it only turns on after i press it for the 2nd time.


Would any of you know if thats a power button failure or did i mess up the wiring inside the case?
 
Definitely a wiring issue.

Made any custom cables? Disconnect EVERYTHING you dont need.
 
i guess i'll take a look at the wires tomorrow everything is stock as this is my first PC build and i dont want to go modding right away
 
Generally I have found that with a wiring issue, it either works or it doesn't. The problem you are describing sounds more like a power supply issue, or a motherboard issue.

DEfinately check the wires first, beyond that, check the two things I mentioned.
 
Check all your connections, the first time I built a pc it would do that, found out that the main atx power connector wasn't on all the way.
 
Last week I was wondering why my PC wasn't booting... It started up for a few seconds then died.

It turns out that a custom Molex connection I made was shorting the system out...
 
well the wires behind the power button are glued in place and the connections fromthe pwr bttn to the mobo seem to be fine. i guess ima have to check all the fan/mobo connections over again right? I'll do it as soon as i turn my comp off.



Aside from this would i benifite anything at all by having an 80mm fan blowing air into my case right over the GFX card area? would it lower my case temps or do nothing at all :(
 
Let me ask you this, do you have any wires running behind your motherboard? This happened to me at one time as well when for some reason I had a 3 pin fan extender running behind my motherboard and it would do exactly what your saying.
 
Pull the power switch from the motherboard pins and short those pins with something metal to see if it acts the same way. It could be an issue with that switch.

This was my first guess as well. If you have an old case's power switch, you could try hooking that one up too.
 
short the pins that run from the power switch to the motherboard?

i would just pull them out and put like foil or something on them and press the button??
could u clarify this a little further because i've never done that before.

and no i dont have a fan or wires behind my mobo but i do have 5 casefans with the 120mm being a bitch when its on fullspeed, thats why i have it on the lowest setting. Weird how i have all those fans and the PSU can drown them all out on high.... die PSU die ur loud
 
You said this is your first PC build. Did you put all of the brass motherboard standoffs into the case or just the ones you need? A stray standoff can short out your motherboard and cause strange symptoms.

Referrng to the mention of shorting the power switch jumpers, use something like the tip of a screwdriver. it tends to work better and be more accurate than trying to wrap tin foil over them. Plus, you only need to touch them for a moment to activate the computer. Keeping them shorted will actually cause your PC to shut itself off again after a few seconds and may be what is happening with your power switch at the moment.

As I think about it, I just realized you said it only wants to come back on after you press the switch a second time. Before disconnecting anything, try pressing the switch twice quickly, once to turn it on and then again before it tries to shut itself down if you can. It could be you've got a toggle switch instead of a momentary switch.

A momentary will only connect the two pins while you're holding it down.
A toggle will continue to connect the pins after you press it once, and the second time you press it it will disconnect the pins.

Because holding the pins connected for a few seconds causes most motherboards to shut down, a toggle switch could cause the symptoms you describe.
