I'm helping my friend put together a new gaming system. It's not a praticularly expensive config, I'm think of something like an X2 3800+, 2GB of RAM, and a single, albiet high end, video card (X1900 or G7900 series).

For now I'm thinking of a single HD and optical drive, though something like a second HD in the future is possible. I doubt he'll be planning to have the rig be SLI or Crossfire ready.

What are some decent case/PSU combinations that won't break the bank? I know the Antec Sonata II has a 450 watt PSU, and that Antec was considered good when I was looking around for my last gaming rig, but I want some opinions here.

As a side note, I live in Canada, so getting ahold of parts from really rare brands may be difficult (many US retailers won't ship to Canada and the domestic sites usually don't carry as wide a selection).

A 7900GT perhaps? That'll be powered by the Sonata II 450W without problems, lots of people have a similar configuration. As for the X1900, which model? If you stick to a single card, you should be alright there too.

The 7900GT is the leading candidate for a video card right now because it's so easy to get good deals on around here. If he did get a X1900, it would probably be an XT. Completely different price ranges, yes, but we've picked a favourite card in each price range - we're just trying to decide if the price difference is worth it.

Well, unless he likes playing the newest games on the highest settings then a 7900GT should be good. And the Antec Sonata II with 450W psu will power it.

I've got a similar question. Along with a 7900gt, will the Antec 450watt which comes with the Sonata II power 2x150gb Raptors,an FX60, and a single IDE DVD Burner? While overclocked about 200mhz? Thanks

Bump with updated question.

Okay, my friend's purchase got delayed for a bit due to a move, but now my dad is considering something in a similar price range and with similar usage characteristics.

I'm thinking a X2 4200+, 2GB RAM, and a X1900XT (with today's price drops and the fact he loves Oblivion I figure it's a great option)... I imagine the Sonata II's PSU would still hold up with a single HD and optical drive, but I'm a little less sure about what would happen if you throw a second HD and optical disk and an old Pinnacle capture card in there, all of which my dad would probably be running in it.
