Hey guys, I had posted back on here a while ago about a different case design to do from scratch, and well forget that lol. Too much work and money involved to pull that off.
My Lian-Li PC-P50 arrived yesterday, and I must say, it is a stunning case. They literally thought of everything. The only con I can come up with, is the hard drive cage is facing front to back instead of side to side.
After dismantling the case, it became quite clear, that it should not be that hard to mod this case into the one I was trying to design with Sketchup. Basically I want to cut the drive cage in a little over half. It is pop riveted on to the frame of the case in just a few spots, and each side of the "drive frame cage" is separate, basically 2 long pieces of aluminum going from top to bottom of the case, with the cutouts for 5.25" devices to be installed. I want to leave the top 2 5.25" bays for my dvd drives, and in the small space on the front near the top, it looks like it would be perfect to custom mount the fan controller.
I want to cut out the bottom floor to accomodate 2 140mm fans, and put the PSU in the front with the fan facing the left side of the case. I would reverse the fan in the psu, and add a slim 80mm to the bottom for intake (maybe 120mm depending on room) the drive cage I need to some how salvage as I want to keep the space for 3 hard drives, and the fan mounted on it, but reverse the direction in the case, and mount it just below the 2nd 5.25" drive, leaving enough room below it for the PSU cables.
Next mods would be a piece of plexi, or alum. to fit along the bottom of the motherboard tray meeting up with another piece of either plexi/alum. The second piece that it meets up with would stretch from one side of the case to the other, and from the bottom of the case to the top. Essentially, these 2 pieces would seal off the motherboard area, leaving only the cutouts on the tray for cabling, which I may also seal off, and just cut the cutouts needed into the piece on the right, so the wiring would come out of the front right of the case, to it's necessary spot. That or get rubber covers like for the water tubing areas, to help with the escape of air.
Next would be a piece of plexi or alum. to seal off the back where the PSU originally goes, and also covering all of the unsused pci slots on the case itself. Basic goal is to seal air from leaking, and have 2 140mm fans as intake on the bottom, and 2 140mm fans as exhaust on top. The other undecided area is the rear 120mm fan, an exhaust setup would seem to deter from the air flow, and sealing it off just seems tacky too, so I thought I would test it as an intake instead, which might help w/ the NB as this will be an i7 build.
After all the cutting etc.. is done, I need to paint the case. and go from there.
Ok I think I have it all out of my head, now anyone have any idea where I should start, or anyone live near Austin, Texas with some tools that wants to help me perform my first mod lol
