Case from scratch?

Hey everyone,

I'm new to the forums, but I've been meaning to try out building a completely custom plexiglass case. I have access to a machine shop and a laser cutter, so actual manufacturing should go smoothly, but I was wondering if anyone has suggestions on things to watch out for when designing a case. I've gotten ahold of the ATX spec so I know where to place mobo mounting holes and back IO panel. Still haven't figured out where to look for PCI/PCIe card heights though.

Unfortunately PCIe is a closed spec so you can't just get the info for free as easily. What I did was find websites that sold the PCIe connectors, or other individual parts you need, and they usually have technical drawings you can download.

I'm sure you've already seen http://www.formfactors.org/ but that is a really great resource and has everything you need to get you probably 80% of the way to building your own case.

Don't forget about motherboard standoffs, PSU mounting, wiring and cooling...

For the PCI slots and backplates I found it easiest to just find a donor ATX case and take measurements with a pair of calipers. Off the top of my head I remember the distance from PCI slot to PCI slot is .8 inches

Either reverse engineer on an existing case for the mobo tray and PCI slots. Everything else is pretty gravy. Keep in mind clearances over and around the mobo. Also keep in mind how long of a GPU you may use someday. If you have the resources/know-how model each part in 3D (SolidWorks, Sketchup, or whatever) and fit it all together to check for interference. It's a good idea to go ahead and choose and even purchase many of the major components you're going to use. Take measurements off them and base your design around them.

I'm currently modeling a case, trying to cram a gaming PC into a small, rugged, aluminum cube.
