I'm planning a NAS. It's not urgent - but I was thinking of starting the project over winter break. Anyways, my goal is to keep the footprint and overall volume as small as possible. I want 10 TB to occupy as much space as a half gallon of milk.
This is the plan, minus case. The PSU is a small form factor one from SeaSonic (here. And the board is an Asus Atom/Ion ITX here.
Question is, how best to cool these drives? Way I see it, there are three options: A, both pull air out of the gaps between the drive and shove it out the back. B, both fans pull air into the case, cramming it between the drives and out a vent in the front.
Or C, the most interesting: five drives have four gaps between them. Each fan could service two gaps. With a separator behind drive 3, one fan could push air into the case. It could loop around the front, and then be exhausted out by the other fan.
