Case cooling dilemma...

Hey guys,

I finally built my first computer. Nothing fancy, just something cheap and functional. I started out with a cheap bare bones kit from tiger (Soyo case and mobo, good deal, I got made $40 due to some rebate issues :) ) I'm having some cooling problems, let me list my specs 1st:

Soyo mid tower lan type case (handle on top, aluminum & removable mobo tray)
Crapy Soyo Mobo (really small, 2 PCI slots and AGP 8x....)
XP 2000+ (Palomino core)
512 of kingston and a no name brand
160 gig Maxtor HDD
On board video untill I get a new GPU for my main rig and put the card in it now in this rig

I just bought a nice coolermaster Dream 7 cooper heatsink w/ fan, and the CPU runs about 50 idle. There are NO case fans and due to strange case design the PSU hangs over the HSF and there is only about 1.2 cm seperating them (the HSF is only 5.5 cm itself!) right now I have the PSU laying on the bottom on the case and the sides of teh case off. There are no slots for fans or anything. Got any suggestions? I know how to use a dremel and I have 2, I can post pix if needed. Let me know what I can do. Oh, BTW the case temp is like 42 C

sounds like a real airflow problem.The heat from your mobo and CPU can't leave the case
properly.So after a while you use the same overheated air to cool you heatsinks.
I think at startup the temps aren't that high,but the increase with time,no?

Maybe you should post a picture, but I'm sure to tell you, you'll need 2 fans.
this to get a good airflow.
first fan (important) = close to CPU, at the rear of your case.(air OUT)
second fan (optional) = front or side panel of case.(air IN)

You'll see the results will be much better. :D

to lower those temps drastically, add a panaflo 4000RPM around there, or a company of your choice and hook that to the back of your case, or tht eop..drill a hole if necessary. I did that to my case^^. but anyway, that should bring the temps real low. like sated before me, the CPU is cooled with hot air, which means absolutely no cooling is taking place.
 
Lite, u pegged it, they are very decent temps on start up, but get increasingly hotter and max out around 50 cpu and 42 case temp. I'll look around for those suggested fans and post pics sometime soon

they look nice.At 42 dB it's not to noisy , compared to it's airflow.
For less noise use bigger fans at lower speeds.
I've got a 80cm at 2500RPM making more noise and less flow than a 120cm at 1500RPM
Notice the bearings of the fan; sleeve, 1 ball or 2 ball-bearing
But just to get some air flowing in your case, they will do just fine.

WOW.....the PSU is right over the HS/F so im guessing it doesnt get full performance, you might want to mod your case up....
 
theoretically, the psu should be sucking the air off the cpu fans exaust, follows what oems do,

I think he's right, I thought only the airflow was bad, but with pics, the PSU setup is making it needless to say.
Buy a nice,cheap case to mod yourself or a pre-modded case. ;)

buy a new psu with a nice 120MM on the botto of it to suck air off the HSF pr mod it and flip it :) youd have to mkae the from fant an exhaust then but i think it would owrk nice :) looks like an 80mm in the front...
 
or...if im seeing his case right, he can move th emobo down more where the HS/F isnt blocked as much or at all, and it should give him mroe room to add ducting, fans, etc.

Also, consider rounding your cables and hiding them:
 
Ok scratch the moving the Mobo down, it wont work. Sorry dude, but your case is jsut retarded. im sorry jsut had to say that. Id jsut go with a new case.like a 30$ plain beige or black one with fan mounts and you'll be fine.
 
Well, I ordered 2 fans, the ones I posted further up in the post. 1 will definately go into the intake place. The second one, I'm not sure of yet. Probably where the open PCI slot things are. I may get another one and cut a hole in the bottom on the case and put an intake there that would push air right up into the CPU area. If I could get a decent case and not have to pay an arm and a leg for S&H I'd do it, but I'll work with what I have and if I mess is up, no big loss.

Oh yea, there looks like there is a place for a smaller fan on the bottom already, under where my HDD is, close to the intake, I may put a fan there. As for cleaning up the cables, I'll do that sometime, not a top priority tho.
 
Hey guys,

I just got the fans I ordered from SVC. I got ones w/ an adjustable speed controller. The only problem is that I don't know how to use it... Here is a pic of the fan w/ all of its appendages:

I'm guessing it it that little blue thing next to the 3 prong connector. Do I use a screw driver or something to adjust it? I wanna figure this out before I put it together myself or break it. Any help would be appreciated!

Well, I figured out how to get the adjuster to work and its pretty sweet. Just one brings the case temp down 11C and when I hold the fan where I want w/ my hand the CPU temp goes down about 7C. AMAZING! lol Now I just have to figure out how I want to mount that fan.

Have you considered PCI slot-exhausts? Sure they exhaust air from the bottom of the case, but they might help in your situation.
 
good idea, some of those do somthing like 30 CFM a few of those and make a blow hole and youd be all set
 
I'm gonna look around and wait for someone to have free shipping or have a case go on sale and pick up a little better designed case.... Right now It's Idling about 41C and case temp is about 33C. Huge difference from before, but it could be much better. If I get a case w/ multiple intake and exhaust as well as a side intake I could be running super cool on air. You should see how ghetto my case is right now. I have the side pannel off and one of the fans hanging by a wiretie so it blows on the CPU. I must say it works quite well, but is far from a permanent solution. It would be better if the PSU was in a better place. Anyone here have a decent case for cheap or could reccommend a sub $50 case that would be somewhat appealing as well as functional?

You may already know but this is a good starting point when looking for a new component or getting price checks. Watch for scams and check vendor ratings before you buy.

Check out the cases, you should be able to get a budget case 30. You can re-use the power supply you have. Personally I would mount the fans you have in your current case and be done with it.
 
Due to some rebate issues with Soyo, I ended up being paid $40 to buy the bare bones kit. I figure that I could make another 20-30 on ebay selling the case, or maybe keeping it around and doing some mod work on it. I really want a case that won't give me this much trouble, one what I can just mount fans on and be done with right now. I have a few extra bux around to for a case, and I figure , for now, I'd be better off w/ a new one!
