Well in the never ending pursuit of cooler temperatures I have been experimenting with fans in and on my case. I have an Athlon 3000xp that has always run hot even with a 120mm rad, 120mm 60cfm fan, DD CSP mag pump, and apogee water block I idle around 48 and max around 52. I recently bought a super lanboy case which has two 120mm fans that are around 35cfm or something. The front is inlet over my hard drives and the rear is exhaust which outputs into my radiator which has the 60cfm pulling air through. I positioned all of my cables so they are entirely out of my airflow so this case should flow about as good as it could from that standpoint.

I tried placing another 120mm fan(albeit it is running really low rpms and dieing) about midway up in the front of the case so it blows towards the cpu block, mb chipset heatsink, and exhaust fan, and a 80mm cheapo fan on the bottom of the case blowing diagonally towards my video card. This helped temps about 1-2 degrees. When I open the case and place a small high rpm regular window fan(the blades are about 80-90mm its probably 2-4 times more airflow than my best 120mm fan) outside the case blowing towards the chipset CPU it nearly instantly lowers my chipset and CPU temps 10 degrees to about 30 for the chipset and 38 idle and 40 load for the cpu.

I think my temps should be like that all the time considering I am not even overclocking. Do I need more powerful fans in my case and what would you recommend for 100+ cfm range that aren't obscenely noisy. I thought going watercooling I could run fans like this and stay cool too but it doesn't seem to be working.
 
woooo, your getting temps of upwards of 50C with WATER COOLING???? :eek:

wtf, what cpu are you using and what is your OC?
 
XP 3000+ stock speed. I recently switched to a D805 with the same cooling setup and I am getting temps without the extra fans around 42 idle and 45 load. I put the 3000 in my other computer that had a 2400 which was getting temps around 44 idle 50 max and it is running at 58 idle. So either this processor runs really hot or the sensors are off on it which I have suspected.

I have experimented with this alot thinking this to be the case, however I have tried 3 air heatsinks and 2 water blocks with the waterblocks in many degrees of tightness. I have used arctic silver 5 and arctic silver ceramique. If the heatsink had poor contact would it be too hot to touch?
 
If its an intel, then 45-50C would almost be exceptable, but that would be on air cooling, i would expect something closer to the 30C range with water cooling.
 
Well after installing Gigabyte Easy Tune 5 I checked the hardware monitor and it said System 50 and CPU 32 so I am guessing the temp I was reading off speedfan was actually the chipset temp not the CPU temp. That is why placing a fan directly on the chipset made such a drastic difference. Now I have placed a small case fan right over the chipset and I am maxing my D805 overclocked to 3.33ghz at 36 and 42 chipset. I am thinking I should go to water cooling my chipset as well. Any ideas if this will make a significant enough impact on my CPU cooling that it would be worth it to use a better fan/heatsink combo for the chipset or should I get a chipset waterblock?
 
i woulod have to agree with rysher on this one. take the block off and see if you put to much paste on or to little. this is vary odd because it sounds pretty good.
