carputer subwoofer box case

I am looking at building a carputer, and have thought about using my subwoofer enclosure as a case. The problem is that im not sure if using the subwoofer with the puter in the box will cause problems. Does this sound like a reasonable idea or would it just cause problems and cause me to break something?

huge magnets, tons of low frequency vibration and mad heat. three things subwoofers produce that will seriously mess your computer up. probably not a good place for a carputer IMHO
EDIT: woot! limp gawd!

yeah, rally bad idea. If the sub is any good the amount of air movement could be enough to crack the PCB's.. There are tons of other places for a computer in your car.

Wont work, it wont even work to have any X-Box sitting on the sub box (tried it lol) Not only is there the heat, low frequency vibration, and large magnets, but a large amount of interference is caused by the subwoofers/amp that will affect your Carputer's video output.

I had my subwoofer on a table at a LAN once about a foot away from my monitor. It still started to screw it up. Love to see what it would do to a hard drive.

Moving air from a car sub wouldnt crack a pcb, pcb'are are pretty famned strong, but yeah building a carputer into a sub enclosure would be a bad idea. I'd recomend keeping it as farr away from the sub as possible.

same here... have you looked at mp3car.com? many people use via motherboards and can build the entire computer in the stock cd player.

EDIT: the one im building is going to be in a custom wooden console. (will be beveled, primed, painted, clearcoated, rubberized, and carbon fibered) Im going to put the pc underneath the armrest with a piece of accrylic over the top and a cold cathode

I think he means any PCI cards sticking out of the motherboard. Not like it matters anyways, because it would be a miracle if the hdd even kept any data at all from all that magnetic interference...

How about if your Dead set on putting the pc in the boot with the subs etc.. dont you biuld the pc in A sub box and put a plexi window over it?? (thats if its for show lol)

you could etch summit on the window etc..

Had thought of that for the 306 b4 i sold her :(

If you wanted you could build a machine in a sub enclosure without a sub in it at all. You could stealth it in the trunk that way. The only thing you'd have to worry about is vibration rattling things loose. Depending on where you mount it, magnetism wouldn't be a problem.

Yeah thats what i meant :p with no sub in... say a box with a sub either side and the amps sitting upfront :D

pop some CCfl's in and boom instant install!

Uhm, as a person who asctually has a computer in his car I vote NO. #1 I agree with the above... if you are really going to have something to show off(puter or sub) both would be quite costly and the puter most certainly would be damaged by magnetic interference. The Show-off-worthy subs these days have rare earth elements mixed in them so they are more magnetic so that each watt you run in your woofer is more efficient. #2 With all teh connections that are involved in a computer there is no logical way to make a completly sealed enclosure without making a complete rats nest of wires entering my banana plugs. Even then that ruins integrity of the electrical signal. IF you ran a ported enclosure you could do something with the wires but that would be one install I would have to see. YOu would have to mount the hard drive outside the box because of reason #1 so a REALLY long IDE or SATA cable is a bad idea because of ,again, signal integrity. I have mine tucked under the dash of my 94 Prelude. I removed the airbag and put the dvd and hard drive in the dash. No electrical interference and not magnetic interference. I have the AC ducted to blow on my CPU for summer operation and it works great.

my general consensus is to keep my computer sub, or any sub at least 5 ft away from any of my electrical/computer equipment.....
