caring for headphones

I see that many people have headphone stands, is it vital that I use headphone stands? I have a pair of hfi-550 DJ1's that i LOVE and i just lay them on top of my desk when i get done listening to whatever im listening to. What is everyone point of view on this?
 
I think most people get those stands because they don't want to drop, squish, kick, or any other miscellaneous molestation, their headphones. I always just leave mine in a spot where these things won't happen. Some people like to think of their headphones as a center piece for their workstation, like a rug for your living room. Other people spend hundreds of dollars on their cables too so they like to keep their "babies" free from harm.
Gravity will probably not affect a headphone driver because it hardly weighs anything compared to a subwoofer or any other "big" speaker driver that might stretch after a period of time facing downward or catywompas.

I have a pair of Sennheiser 497s that I have had for almost 2 years now, which I leave sitting on my desk. About 6 months ago I started noticing there is a spot on the side of each of the ear cups where the paint has warn through. Knowing this, I will probably be doing something diffrent with my next set of headphones. If you don't care about cosmetic damage, I can't see a problem leaving your headphones sitting on your desk.
 
I've got a pair of HD-270s and i just sit them on my mousepad whenever im done with them. They've been dropped quite a few times (onto carpet) from rather large heights, sat on, bent and generally knocked and they're still goin strong after 3 years :)
