I was going to post this under the resume thread but didn't want to post something off topic so ill just make a new thread, since it will end up dieing shortly after.

I was talking to one of my co-workers today, who is looking for a better job(Unix admin right now) and is also doing some interviewing for our current company.

He mentioned a turn off when looking at 40apps was when someone was at a company for awhile and never moved up.

This is my first i.t job. I am a level 2 field tech. Ive been here for 3 years. I am starting to get bored because its starting to be the same thing over and over again and want to start learning more. I've been saying its time to get a resume together for a while now but just haven't. I think its time to start looking now.

Is the fact that i haven't moved up going to look bad? I have a 2 year degree right now and plan on going back in the future. I don't have any certs however I plan on getting my A+.

not having certs will weigh much more then lack of movement in your previous job. A+ is easy, all you need to pass it is $300.

i think its pretty stupid to hold an applicants lack of promotion in a previous job against them, that could probably be the reason they are looking for a new job in the first place. if they were perfectly happy with the job they currently had, they wouldnt be applying for something else. there are so many situations where it would be out of the employees hands to advance in the company.
