A concept is taking the Cardboard case to a different level. My only concern is dust and heat. Guess a low power low heat setup might work. Like the case design and shape though.

I once built a min-itx HTPC out of foamboard, which is roughly similar in strength and heat retention to corrugated cardboard. I have to say, it was the quietest (and slowest) computer I've ever owned. My computer had an external psu with just a dc-dc converter inside- I must say that a full psu as pictured would make me a bit weary around all of that kindling.

But, as a concept for something like that one laptop per child (one desktop per family?), it makes sense since they are low powered and consequently low heat, and the light weight would be good for shipping it all over the world. Now they just need a cardboard monitor, mouse and keyboard and they are all set.

Aren't the plastic and steel cases we already use recyclable? You just have to take them apart first (metal separate from plastics)

I recycled a dell case I had from back in the day that way. Well, the plastic parts anyway. Metal went to landfill via "waste management".

Old CRT monitors are another story. People in China are sick and dying because we send them our broken CRT's, they disassemble them (cheap labor) and get sick from the mercury and poisons inside. And American companies are making money doing it. We suck sometimes.

are people getting sick because the US is sending them there, or because the chinese are buying them and not taking proper precautions when disassembling/disposing of them? :p
 
Why do they have to do it. Why can't we do it. Why can't we send EVERY CRT monitor in the world to outerspace in a rocket ship into the sun.

I can see many people buying that computer case to be "hip" and show everyone how much they "care" for the environment. One person's cause, is another persons trend.

We can't do it because we need more than $6.55 an hour to do it, and we have OSHA
 
Of all the components on a computer, the case is the least damaging to the environment when disposed of (even just thrown into a landfill). And the cost of metal is still high enough that any steal or aluminum cases are worth recycling. This is a case of feel-good environmentalism and has nothing to do with helping the planet etc etc :rolleyes:

I would bet that ONE fire caused by using a flammable case will cause more damage to the environment then anything saved by this idea.

Seriously? Elmer's Glue? I'm supposed to believe this will hold a computer together XD

+1 on calling this stupid. I mean really now...not only does this thing look like ass but there is a reason why cases are made out of metal geez...

Back in the day, lots of people would post pics of their ghetto cardboard box cases... Now someone makes a commercial one, and everyone slags it? :rolleyes:

Seriously though, unless the cost of the case is keeping people from affording a pc, I remember finding crappy steel cases for $25 if you searched around. Why bother with a cardboard one?

On top of that, cardboard isn't exactly ideal as an 'environmentally friendly' material either, unless it's made from hemp or other non-tree fibers.
 
i could see the possibility of a store that only sells cardboard based electronics. cell phones, BD players, video game consoles, tv,s etc. :p
 
Either way I find it a pretty interesting case. Every case isn't going to be cardboard from here on out, so why the fuss about someone trying something different, ehh. I like it. Would I use it, no, but it is still a cool design and I couldn't make something that professional looking out of cardboard.
 
take that same shape and make it out of metal, and you have a cool case

Cardboard has a fire and ignition threshold of 258 and 427 degrees CELSIUS, respectively.

Or maybe "plastic fibers" would be better?
In the end growing anything needs land, water few other things.

And for the record, here where I live about 90% of country would be forest without human... because that remaining 10% is lakes. (now coverage is "only" three fourths of land area)
 
the whole 'green' idea behind the case is pointless, but as a peice of design i really like it. And yeh, somehow i doubt it would catch fire unless the PSU shorted or something
 
nice idea ...as long as its not overpriced.
As to fire and dust , I had my computer in a case made out of a cardboard box for over a year, there is no difference dust and temp wise as long as you have enough ventilation.My cardboard case was actually the most quiet case i ever had. :D

Yeah, I think the point was that it was a sustainable solution to all those steel and aluminum cases floating around.

elmer's glue once set is stronger then the cardboard it self
l2adhesives

and the heat isnt the issue so much as every thing having a common ground
