Alright...I assume im beating a dead horse with this one but here it goes anyway.

I'm looking to upgrade without dropping a ton of cash. At the moment I have a 9800XT. I'm looking at a BFG 6600GT OC. I am yet to see a single review or shoot out where these two cards are both included.

Would moving from a 9800XT to a 6600GT even be considered an upgrade?

And can the best of 2003 even contend with the high-end of mainstream of late '04 - early '05?

Well whats the rest of your system looking like?

And no the 9800XT will get beat by 6600GT every time unless it is a game where radeon cards perform better but I think even then the 6600GT performs better in Half Life 2 than a 9800XT
 
Rest of system looks like this:

P4 3.2Ghz 800MHz FSB
Abit IC7-G
Corsiar XMS Professional PC4000
2x Western Digial 74GB 10K RPM SATA HDD (Raptors)

CPU and GPU are cooled by a Zalman Reserator (braces for impact), which I somewhat modded a lil extra cooling boost.
 
It does get beat by the 6600GT, but not in every single test.

I think Anandtech has compared them in one of thier 6600GT reviews.

I'd stick with hte 9800XT and save up for a better (more noticeable) upgrade.
 
don't upgrade. you will get around same performance. however if u can afford to switch to a pci-x motherboard get x800 its a bit more expensive then 6600gt, but not a lot like 25 usd. and you will see a huge difference then. but switching to a 6600 gt from 9800xt would be a waste of money. if you really want to switch sell your existing card you can get a good money to buy a good motherboard with pci-x. and then get the x800. good brands to get x800 is sapphire and powercolor. i would chose the sapphire personally they are better and cheaper. but never get asus they are overpriced and crap.
 
It would be only a small upgrade with regards to graphics processing power, but with features like PS3.0 amongst others its quite a substantial upgrade.

The only downside is most 6600 variants only include 128MB graphics memory, unless you buy the XFX 6600GT.

I myself have a 6600GT, the Gainward 128MB 6600GT Golden Sample "GLH" (Goes Like Hell) to be precise.
This does 540Mhz core and 1150Mhz memory under full warranty, and can easily be pushed to 580/1300 on stock cooling with no volt mods, i've seen reports of 670/1300 with extreme cooling measures.

at 575/1300 i get 21,504 in 3D Mark 2001, which is great performance and shows it will easily handle todays games, the score is somewhat CPU limited, a better overclock on the processor would increase that score significantly.

Also at a later date you would be able to purchase an extra one of these cards and have them running in SLI mode if you so wish, and at the speeds they are capable of, it would be like running an overclocked 6800 Ultra in your system.

trebleking; if you check it out he has 9800xt which means his mb is agp. he is looking at the 6600gt agp. which means he can never do sli set up. with that mobo. personally i do agree dont upgrade now, but if you insist then get a mobo with pci-x and get x800 (vanilla)
 
i started writing my post before anyone replied to his original post lol, ah well stay with the 9800XT untill you can get a BIG upgrade.

you know what? keep your current system. w8 a month. i just heard atil will relase x800 xl on agp platforms. they cost around 300 usd. which is awesome. better then 6800gt and much much cheaper. that means you will see at least double better performance then your current 9800 xt.
 
yup....going from a 9800xt to a 6600gt is not a very good upgrade..unless you can sell that 9800xt for like 300...(I sold mines right after the 6800 and x800 series came out to get a decent price on the 9800xt...) If I were you, I would not settle for nothing less than a 6800gt...

I hate to break it to you but there are no PCI-X video cards ;)

(note: he means PCI-E)

Anywho, yeah, wait a while, save up, and grab an X800XL when they come out for AGP.

No offenc, but isnt that a bit of a redundant statement?
 
Not really. You could (probably) say that a 6600GT would beat an 8500 in every game, even ones where ATI outperformed equivalent nVidia cards.
 
Oh woops I misread it, I though it said "6600GT beats the 9800 except in games where the 9800 beats the 6600gT" which would be a redundent statement

Roughly comparable cards. 6600GT is on par or slightly faster in recent generation games (7/8), but it will most definitly pull away when the NV4x tech gets used (i.e. SM3.0) in DX9 class games.

You have to realize that the NV4x / R42x were a HUGE jump in performance compared to the previous kings, so even 'handicapped' mainstream cards such as the 6600GT are going to compare very well to the best that 2003 could offer. The next generation cards are going to start this whole mess over again :rolleyes:

Thanks alot guys,

I actually decided to climb off my wallet and just go to PCIe. I entended to save the full upgrade for later this year but I have some issues with being patient.

So for now it'll be SLI capable motherboard but im just gonna roll with a single card for the first couple months and then double up sometime in the summer.
