Well the time has come to get myself a new card, my current one is lacking in power for what i want. My current system is:
x2 5000+ @3.0ghz
2gigs of ram
8600GT
450watt FSP PSU
XQpack

I've been looking around at cards, mainly the 4770 or 4850. I plan on playing COD4, Fallout3, Crysis, Farcry2, stuff like that. I have an 18inch CRT and usually run at 1600x1200 max, but a little lower doesnt bother me. Basically, is the 4850 worth the extra $20 or should i just go with the 4770?

4770 would be the best value.. the GTS 250/4850 will give you a bit more power..
Tough decision...

I would go with the 4770. it uses much less power and with your cpu you wont even fully push the 4770 much less a 4850.

I would go for the 4850, if you decide to upgrade your cpu anytime soon it definately is the best card.

Still with your cpu @ 3ghz you would still notice a difference especially running at 1600x1200, and its only $20 you dont want to be kicking yourself later for $20.

so you would spend more money and use more power for a gain that will not even be realized unless he upgrades his cpu? even with a high end cpu there is very little performance difference between the 4770 and 4850 and the op probably doesnt plan on upgrading his cpu.

The 4850 is a better card, if you have a am2+ m/b i would look at getting a x2 7750 cpu as well, they are going pretty cheap at least here in nz and it uses a phenom core rated at 90w.

Edit: since when is a 4850 so power hungry a 450w psu wont handle it?

The whole point of this is to prolong this systems life. I dont plan on upgrading anything else anytime soon. Mainly because this is a 939 system. Also take into consideration that this is an MATX system, so heat and size is an issue, and form what I've heard the 4770 excels in both of those areas.

well based on that the 4770 is the very best option for you then.

I am also looking at either a 4830 or a 4770. One thing that had me leaning towards the 4830 is that the 4830 has a 256 bit memory interface but the 4770 is only 128 bit. But the 4770 has faster ddr5 memory, so maybe that makes up for it only being 128 bit?

Either way its a big upgrade from a 8600gt and i'm sure you will be happy with the results :)

they have almost the same memory bandwidth and thats what matters. you can easily oc the 4700 cards memory from 3200 to 3600 and then it will have the exact same memory bandwidth as the 4830. even stock though the 4770 is faster out of the box and consumes less power so there is no reason to get the 4830.

cannondale06, It looks like your right about the memory bandwith. I 'll probably be getting the 4770.
