im building a rig for my grandparents, and its coming outta my pocket, long story short, killed 5 year old hp pavilion, so im responsible for paying for it. ive been looking into a way to get a good graphics card, anything is good compaired to my geforce fx5200. i think i found a good card to buy.

im thinking i could flash this card to a 9800 pro and at a 140 pricetag, it seems like a good plan. would this card be good for flashing from a 9800se to pro?

any suggestions on a sub 150 dollar card would be greatly appreciated. thanks
 
why do your grand parents need a good video card...they gamers or sumthin, lol
 
The 6600 AGP is a very good decision.

Please do not buy a 9800 SuckyEdition.
I die a little inside whenever somebody buys a SE. :(
 
well, my grandparents dont need a 9800, i need one, and its coming outta my bank account, which i cant touch for another 3 years.my parents are ordering the stuff so they dont know what im buying, so i just decided to spend some of my bank account money a little early. which results in me getting a new graphics card :D . ive heard of issues with the 6600 for agp slots. thanks for the help
 
I think he is giving the fx5200 to the grandparents and keeping the new card for himself.
Rather than the 9800se I would drop the extra 20 bucks and get a guarenteed real 9800pro for only 159. HUGE upgrade from a fx5200. Or if you want to spend 180 for the 6600GT it's worth it over the 9800pro, but it's a small difference compared to the HUGE difference between a fx5200 and 9800pro.

I think retail pci-e 6600gt's are 180$ on newegg. But refurb'd agp ones should be close to 150$. A 6600gt is what i'd suggest as well, since the 9800pro is clearly showing its age.

[Edit:] Damn, just checked newegg's refurbed cards. Didn't see a refurbed agp at all, and the pci-e ones were all around 176$. Guess the other ones I was thinking of got sold off(they had a couple xfx's awhile ago).

More expensive of course, but maybe they'll let it go since it's 2 cards, and both are new. Could also say that any grandkids that come over could actually do something on the comp you're buying for your elders.
 
6600gts in sli is pointless it only offers a minimum (some times none at all) performance increase over a single 6800gt in sli compatible games and in none sli games its worse and at a higher price

the 9800 se i found has 256 bit memory, and is VERY VERY similar to a 9800 pro. with a bios flash, im pretty sure i can open the 4 other pipelines. i have an agp board, and probably will for awhile, unless msi puts out its socket 754 with pci-e(754 will never die!) i wanna keep the price as close to 150 as i can, would the 6600 non gt have an edge over the 9800 pro? im just trying to minimize costs for the build, cause after all, its coming outta my bank account.
 
Vanilla 6600 if you need the extra power or a 128bit 6200, it's for your gandparents how much power do they really need?
 
well, its not really for my grandparents. im buying them parts, but im gonna take some of the parts that im buying for them(160 gig western digital and graphics card), and switch em out with some of my current ones(fx 5200 and 19 gig quantum bigfoot.) cause i ruined a machien that was going ot them so i hafta buy the parts to build one for them. so im using it as an excuse to upgrade.
 
well, im spending my money cause my parents believe in "paying for your mistakes" :mad: so im not really ripping them off, just taking money from my bank account that ill use in 3 years for college books.
 
Make sure you order an AGP card, not a PCI Express one like everyone here seems to be recommending for some reason. And don't get a 9800SE, my 9600Pro could probably do better (which I may be selling in the near future, you can PM me if interested).

Definately agree with that. But the idea was that he could pass it off as an upgrade for both people. Unfortunately, my mind forgot to register that he already has a video card to use for his grandparents' comp, and so my idea really makes no sense anyway :/
 
6600gt's come in agp...

Anyway, just looking at the cheapest wd ide hard drivess on newegg, they go from 57$ + s/h for 80gb to 86.5$ + s/h for 160gb. Obviously the 160gb is the better deal, but if you already have one hard drive then how much do you really need the extra space? If you took 30$ from that and put it into the video card, you'd go from 9800pro or 9800se to 6600gt. Worth it imo.

[Edit:] And if you're going SATA, the difference is about 34$ between 80 -> 160gb.

i got my 160 gig from, sadly to say, best buy. it was 40 bucks after mail in rebates so i couldnt turn it down. i had to get it cause my hard drive as of now(19.3 gig quantum bigfoot) isnt cutting it for a person who edits video. my grand parents will have no issues, because they are only gonna be websurfing and typing documents with the 19.3 gig. im gonna shop around a zzf and tiger direct and check out whats the cheapest price for a 6600. thanks for the help
