I have a choice between getting a radeon 9800 SE and using tweaked drivers to make it a pro, buying a pro, or just buying one of the really new cards. Which should i do? i dont need massive fps on hl2 (the game im waiting for) but id like decent performance.

Well the 9800 SE is pretty crappy and if the mod wouldn't work it'd be cash thrown down the drain. The 6800 GT is a good buy.

For around $200 a Radeon 9800Pro is a great card with a decent amount of power. I play FarCry @1024x768, high details, and 4xAA/8xAF and this is about the worst performance hit I see. I am on a 3+Ghz machine though. ;) In that screen my flashlight is on and overhead light is streaming in also. Not to bad for a 9800Pro at all.

Now, I must warn you. Lotsa nOO.......I mean folks are gonna come in here and say "well just spend 50-100 more bucks and get a 6800GT." And that's fine if you're looking to spend that much money. But from the sound of things, you'd like to keep it under $200 or so. So I'd go with a good 'ol 9800Pro. Don't take the chance on getting a SE thats not mod'able.

The 6800GT will be more then just $50-$100 more. I think your thinking of the 6800nu. The 6800nu is faster then the 9800XT and 5950u and it sells for less then $300. If i was buying a new card now thats the one i would get for that price range. I wouldn't invest $200 in card thats quite a bit slower unless your just really strapped for cash.

The 6800GT OC'd to Ultra speeds is going to net you around 2x the frames per second or more compared to the 9800 pro in the majority of games. Its also going to cost you around $399 to get one.

If your trying to keep your budget at $200 and not much more then i would go ahead and go with the 9800 pro as it will give you the best performance in that price range.

I pricewatched the gt, and it runs aroudn 400 which is way more than id like to pay for a new card.

I think i may end up getting a pro, but i dont really want to buy a new one. I'm short on cash, so if anyone has one theyd like to sell, lemme know.
