Hi:
I have an HP computer with a low-end Core 2 Quad processor & 8GB ram.

It's hooked up to a 1080p HDTV.
The most intense graphics it's used for is Wow.

What would I need to put in it to get Wow @ Full 1080P resolution with all the graphical goodies turned on? Something with Native HDMI out would be nice as well.

How big of Power supply would I need for the card? (It's got a 300W PS unit in it right now)
 
Wow is still pretty much unplayable at max.

If you want to max everything, but turn shadows down a notch or two, and get perfect framerates everywhere but dalaran (where you'll get 40's - 50's) most decent cards will do it at 1080p.

Maybe a HD 5750 or 5770, wow is really more cpu dependent than gpu.

Which quad do you have?
 
most likely a Q8XXX or a Q9XXX cuz as far as i know thats all the C2Q's HP uses in their consumer products... now if he paid 3k for his pc... he might have a Q9X5X in it...
 
5670 would be the very highest to go on that 300watt oem psu. I would probably grab a 4670 though since they can be found for much cheaper and use a little less power too. a 4670 would be massive upgrade if you are running integrated graphics at the moment.

I have to LOL at the 8gb of ram on an HP though.
 
I'd upgrade your PSU to a 400watt or 500watt psu, if you have some money to spare. 400 watt and 500 watt PSUs can be had for only like $30-$40.00. That being said, a 5750 runs eyefinity on triple monitors fairly well. There's a video on youtube showing like an average of 40 fps across 3 monitors at 1600x1200x3 so, you should be able to achieve 60 fps at 1080p probably with 4xaa.

if he wanted to be cheap then a 4670 is only about 70 bucks and he could keep his power supply.
 
it's a Q6600 as far as I know: Yes, a very low end Quadcore. Currently I have one of my old cards in there (a Nvidia 6600gt IIRC). The game is very playable, but we can't play at full 1080p. I don't think the processor is the limiting factor, as I can play at much higher resolution on my Athlon 64 X2 with my Radeon 9800XT.

Ideally, I'd convince my wife to let me spend $500 to rebuild my rig, and then move the 9800 & Power Supply to this (her Wow) computer. Money is a bit tight right now, with some big expenses on the horizon, so I'm looking at some lower-cost options.

thats odd because the 6600gt is as fast as the old 9800XT. I sill suggest a 4670 if you dont want to upgrade the power supply.

I'm not sure a 4670 would use less power than a 5670, the 5xxx are on a 40nm die process, right?

according to all the reviews I have seen the 5670 does use more power. yeah I would have thought the shrink to 40nm would have helped a lot more than it did since the 5670 only added 80 more sp and actually lost 12tmu. honestly I think the 5670 is a poor card for the price.

You say this rig is for playing WoW.There is one very important question that nobody has asked you.

DO you raid 25man?

Every bit of advice you've received in this thread is crap until this question is answered.
I'm running WoW on a Q6600, ATI 4890 and 4 gigs of ram at 1080p.Questing,grouping,and 10man raids are all fine with plenty of eye candy.Try this in 25man and on the first AE pull you are F'd.I keep a separate ATI profile called "WoW25" with everything off or turned down.

Thanks for the tip. We just got started in Wow in November, and have been concentrating on Questing, Leveling, and an occasional instance so far. My wife is just starting to get into raids (I'm a month behind because of a business trip out of the country) and I'm not sure if we're going to be doing 25man.
 
1. First upgrade the power supply and get a quality 500-550W unit.
2. Then get a Radeon 4890 or 5770.

I currently have a Q6600 with a ATI 5850 (previously had a 8800GT), and it works out pretty well.....though it is overkill for most games. Then again, I like having a very powerful video card :D.
