Does it really matter which one?

I'm debating over buying an internal one or external one, it mainly just has to be able to read SD, SDHC, and CF cards (plus microSD, but I don't think that will be a problem since most can use adapters)

Does the quality really matter on these? Can you tell a difference? Is one form better than the other (external vs internal)

I like the idea of external USB, for the fact that I can upload data (pictures) to any computer be it my laptop or my desktop but in reality. I only do photo edits on my desktop. The only time I will transfer them to my laptop is when I need to make more room on the CF card out in the "field" which is very seldom since I stack up on cards.
 
That seems awfully expensive for an external reader. I also don't see "CF" cards listed am I missing it?
