Which would serve me better. A 6600gt or a basic 6800. Both are pci-e and probably will not be oc. The 6600gt seems like the better of the two. But then why is the 6800 more money?

The 6800 is the better of the two. Check here for a technical comparison and here for game benchmarks. The 6600GT has a 500MHz GPU with 8 pipes and the 6800 has a 325MHz GPU with 12 pipes which puts them very close together in pixel shader speed. But the memory bandwidth on the 6600GT is 16GB/sec whereas the 6800 is 22.4GB/sec. The 6800 also has the edge in vertex shaders. Plus many people also take into account the possibility of unlocking pipes on the 6800. Even without unlocking them the 6800 beats the 6600GT consistently.
