Card Lengths

Hey guys,

I'm looking to build a SFF system to last me for a bit and have been thinking about going mITX. Now the case I'm looking at gives 290mm or 11.41 inches of GPU clearance.

Doing some quick googling it looks like that gives enough room to run any of the current single chip cards out there? Looks like the 290x is 11 inches and the 980 is 10.5. Which is all about the same as my 5870. So it looks like manufacturers have more or less capped the length of a single chip card to right around 11 inches?

Thanks for reading and sharing any knowledge you have!

you have to check the length even the cooler.. some manufacturers tend to just specify the PCB measures but no the cooler.. some coolers tend to be longer (some are very long indeed) than the PCB itself like This example, or This one...

actually the stronger Mini ITX card in the market as far i know its the GTX 970 as you can find some manufacturers as gigabyte that offer a mini version like This one feeding it with just a 8pin connector.. there are others as inno3D or MSI who also offer mini version..

Not only the length, but you'll also need to keep the height in mind. Some coolers like the STRIX and TwinFrozr extend around half an inch above the mounting bracket. The reference coolers on the 980 and 290X do not have this issue, and neither do the aftermarket blowers on the 970 as far as I'm aware. A blower-style cooler is obviously going to be better for a SFF system.

It varies a lot, like usually reference cards will sit around 11" for the highest tier cards, but like with the 970s there really isn't a reference design so lengths vary, same for any set of custom cards. Which case are you looking at using?

Thanks for the replies guys.

Armenius, I didn't even think about taller coolers...

Choopyplz, I'm looking at the Corsair Obsidian 250D.

Though with the size issues I may just go for the 350D instead since it'll do 380mm (14.9 inch) graphics cards and has room for taller coolers. It may take up a bit more room on my desk but not having to worry about the card I select and having larger quieter fans seems like it's worth it in the long run.
