 Ok my friend has a Demension 9100c ? idk, it's a really slim, btx computer. He has a pci x16 slot and he wants a new video card.

but i doubt the regular cards would fit would they? or will they?

if not where can i get one that will? or a half ass deasent case for btx

if not you want to find a "low profile" video card - unfortuanyl you cant get anything decent, i mean like fx 5200 i think is the best one - although Matrox just came out with a PCi-e 8x low profile card.

cool thanks

im no video card guru so how dose this compare to a, idk X300? What kinda FPS could he see in CSS?

I dont think the firemv is a gaming card so much as it is a workstation card. Game performance would be horrible. All of the low-profile video cards I have seen are AGP, you might have a difficult time tracking down a decent pci-e one.

Yes, you wont find any good gaming cards in low profile simply because the good cards need the large layouts.

How slim is this dell. You may require a card with a low profile bracket. It's possible, but I have yet to see a single low profile pci express card.

[H]ard|Solution: Remove, or even better, mod the side panel. <-- (cut large sloppy hole in side) Then use a regular full size video card.

lol.

Or you can listen to Thor and use a riser card with a few case mods. (If the case is tall enough and you dont need any PCI slots.)

so this is pretty much the best slim pci x car?

IMO for low profile it is. Its the Fastest out there ( I think ) plus its a non-Turbo cache model/

we have a 5100c with a Radeon x600se 128mb, faster than a 6200, but not by much. its about as good as i've seen in low profile, and even with a 3.2ghz p4, its struggles with anything of any requirement, g/f plays the sims2 on it and even that slows down a bit.

i don't think i would need this tho

You could use it to install a full size video card in your friend's Dell.....

read up a wee bit and look at my 2 suggestions.

look at the x600se if the sims 2 is as advanced as he's going to get, no BF2 or HL2, she plays its at 1280x1024 with no AA and it does a pretty good job, you have to look for the slow downs, but they do happen. A gig of ram would be a very good idea tho.

Do you know the rough clearance for a card? I can't imagine it being too small that it couldn't fit a 6600gt or X700.

no, i'll check tommrow, if i remember

Alrighty. I mean I have a BFG 6600gt and it probably is about an inch (give or take) thick, including the heatsink and is probably 8 inches (give or take) across.

see if you can get a hold of the riser module.

then you can insert 1 full sized PCIe card into the riser card in a 90 degree angle. Might be able to fit a 6600GT in there as long as it's not too long.

edit:

actually the 9100c chassis won't take a riser module. I think it's the next size up Dell that does... Sorry man.

Those 6100s are hell to upgrade. The X600 is the best video card out there far and wide. I searched a long time for my friend and never came across anything better. He plays BF1942 and a few other games but even HL2 barely runs at all.

My recommendation, if your friend is a serious gamer, get a larger case and a proper video card for probably less than what it would cost to get a good slim-line setup.
