I plan on getting doom 3 in a few weeks and i cant decide on a new graphics card cause my FX 5200 Ultra is getting real crappy.

ive narrowed it down to two

e-GeForce 6800,128MB DDR

or

SAPPHIRE ATI RADEON 9800 PRO Video Card, 128MB DDR, 256-bit, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP -BULK -OEM

i still cant decide if the 6800 is worth the extra money?

then there is the

e-GeForce 6800GT, 256MB DDR3 AGP8X

which i heard is awesome but is 400 dollars and i think that is very expensive for a videocard.

thanks.

current specs:
amd 2500+
80 gig wd
1 GB 2700 Crucial Ram

Well, how much is the 6800? $300? I saw it on some sites for $350.

If the normal price is $350, you might as well spend the extra dough and up the performance big time.

I saw a Geforce 6800 128mb for $300 on pricewatch, is that the same one that was outperforming the x800 pro ?

No the 6800 is the knocked down version of the 6800Gt card you saw whooping the x800 Pro. The 6800NU is only 12 pipes, but from what I've read, it's still a good 20-30% faster than the 9800 pro, plus you get SM3.0 and other goodies!
9800Pro - $200
6800NU - $300

Up to you, on how much you want to spend, both are great cards, just in different price brackets

no, thats the GT, newegg has a 6800 vanilla with a free copy of farcry for $300 shipped. 6800 should beet a 9800 pro and the 6800 includes more features

the 6800 non ultra should be about equal to a x800pro in doom3 performance with current drivers etc. If you want to play doom3, I would really pay the extra and get at least the 6800 non ultra but the 6800gt is the best bang for your buck right now.

Couldn't of said it any better. This is a great thread.
You'll find a bunch of 9800Pros on Ebay as people upgrade to the 6800GT.
Personally, I think they should keep their cards as a spare, because I've had cards go out, and it's always nice to have the previous one still laying around. But I can understand the idea of upgrading and getting some money back.
So let's put all the ideas together.

9800Pro = $200
6800NU = $300
6800 = $350
6800GT = $399
6800Ultra = $499
6800Water = $599

Well I really don't think there is a different between the 6800NU and the 6800 they are the same I believe, and as for the 6800Water, that is specific to the manufacturer. There are only 3 standard 6800 cards out right now, the 6800, the 6800GT and the 6800Ultra. Some have even more like the ones with water cooling or the Ultra Extremes but those are just their top of the line cards. Correct me if I am wrong

i built the pc last august and nothing good was coming out so i decided to go with a low budget card until half life 2 and doom3 came out. however, they were both delayed again so i decided to jus wait until a date was set in stone to buy a new card.

I'm about to go from a GF4 ti4600 to a 6800GT 256MB (BFG from Best buy should be about $360 after the 10% discount (see HotDeals section for coupon)).

There are 6 in stock at my local Best Buy. I know one of the service reps there and she has grabbed one and stuck my name on it.

Pffff, where do you live!

grrrr why does your best buy get all the good stuff. I have called my local BB and CC and they all just have the 9800pro

Becuase we are a small college town and the closest city doesn't have many computer literate people (Roanoke). And all the college students are gone for the summer.

Its not like they even ever have it in stock either....They just never get anything. THe best thing a store has near me is....a 9600pro...and thats it

www.evga.com should* have plenty of GT's in stock.

*-Last time I checked.

By the way - the 6800 and the 6800NU are the same thing, "NU" is adopted from the 5xxx series meaning "non-ultra," since those and the Ultra's were the only 2 types of cards.

They did untill i was about to buy one. They are now backordered since an hour ago and i called them .. THey said they prob wont get any till next week

yea i was in that bind also, but i decided right now ill just wait untill half life 2 comes out and then ill upgrade. I think my 5200 is holding me down for now, but it wont last much longer in the gaming market.
