I've been looking around for awhile now for a pc to put into my car particularly for audio reason. (playing FLAC for example) But all the PCs that I've come across don't really mention anything about what audio card they're using so i assume they're running from the chipset and i can't imagine that would be vary quality at all from my experience of chipsets vs audio cards.

I've also thought of building my own PC but I'm unsure of the connections an Audio card would need or if i'd need a DAC or similar. The power supply would be the other problem of building my own...I'm sure they're out there but I'm not sure how easy it would be to setup.

I would love help from anyone who could provide it and point me in the right direction.
 
Get a Raspberry Pi or similar and hook up an external DAC to it. Super cheap, problem solved.
 
If you slap Linux on it I'm sure there is an easy to use interface that would work fine on the Raspberry Pi and play FLAC's with issue.
 
Does your car have a really good system? I'm just saying that if you don't have an audophile or high quality system, then chipset sound probably isn't going to be that big of deal. Car environments just aren't that great when it comes to sound quality once you factor in car noise, road noise, lack of insulation, etc. Just something to think about. I'm by no means an expert in car PC's but I've done quite a few car installations in my time.
 
If you car does have a great setup, you could find a case that has a low-profile pci slot, and use a Xonar DX or some other soundcard that includes a low-profile bracket.
 
A typical Car PC motherboard these days would use a mini-ITX Atom or AMD Brazos motherboard. I'd go with an external DAC, preferably one fed via async USB, although optical S/PDIF should be acceptable.

yeah i agree with you here... seems like more of a "because I can do" thing than a "should do thing"
