Thought about shoving this in Mobile Computing, but this seemed more appropriate.
Mostly right now I'm just looking at the potential pitfalls, the real project is slated for summer. Primarily I want it to be a GPS/MP3 device, but the ability to play DVDs and perhaps some games is attractive.
Tentative specs:
VIA Epia TC (Runs on native car current, low voltage and native MPEG2 acceleration)
XP Home or Tablet
6.4" LCD touchscreen
Garmin GPS18 USB GPS unit (Talking software a must, $100 price tag)
Slimline DVD drive
Hauppage WinTV PCI TV/FM tuner
Mini keyboard mounted on swivel (Covers monitor when not in use)
40GB HD
1GB RAM (Hey, PC2100 is cheap these days)
In an ideal situation I'd like to use a CF card to boot Windows, but I haven't found a way to boot from that without writing to it in the process. (Is there a way to integrate two file systems into the same physical drive, but one is read-only? Linux does it easily, but there's no good navigation software that I've found for Linux as yet.) I'm going to TRY to fit it in the dash, though only the monitor and keyboard need to go there for sure. I've had the GPS antenna mounted for use with my laptop for some time, as well as a mini-stereo plug.
If this works I'll be living high on the proverbial hog, so any advice or well-wishes are more than welcome.
