Ok, is this something I can do through a firewire port or do I need to buy a certain type of capture card? I'm kind of confused in this respect. I'm shooting at standard def, 720p and 1080p.

You need a TV/satellite/cable card that supports the HD formats you want.
They all record, usually in MPEG2.
Firewire is not a requirement.

I believe that current 1080 broadcasts are 1080i though but I'm sure someone will correct me if I am wrong.

Broadcasts are1080i. By law, all cable boxes are required to either have a usb or firewire connection. They don't have to be active.

There are programs that will capture the usb/firewire feed, but you might get some interference in the recorded video. I'm still working on my HTPC project, but at the moment it is on hold cause of college. Man...I wish I was back in high school.

well i'm pulling it off of a canon xh a1, does that make a diff? I'm not taking it from hd programs on tv.
