hye guys i got some spare capacitors from car audio builds 500k farad and 1 farad these things are huge. i was wondering about using em on my computers video card or something? if i put em on the 12 volt rail on one fo the moelx's woudl it affect the entire rail or just ath one plug?

i also have some 40,000mfd caps from the phone company used for power filtertration not so much for quick surges

It could work for 'smoothing', however you would need to put a current limiting resistor in series as the capacitor would be a short circuit when you power it up. Also a blocking diode for when the computer is off such that it doesn't drain into the PSU.

It should work for a single rail as they typically share a common bus. It would probably be rather rough on the components and not worth trying to use. Some sort of current limiting resistor or precharge setup would be a must. Your PSU would either shut down or explode otherwise.

I don't think it would help that much in that situation, and would only affect the one line. It'd probably be way to much work for what it's worth.

I think I have once seen a 3 Farad capacitor. It was the size of a large beer can. I cannot begin to fathom how large a 500k Farad cap would be.

500k would look like a transformer a power company would use. You gotta be using a crapload of power for 500kF to actually be needed for anything useful. The only other use I can think of would be rail guns and particle accelerators. The only useful place to stick one of those things would be inside of a PSU itself. You could probably wire it in and only lose power to a serious brownout but it would be extremely difficult to justify it for anything interesting.
