Can't use second SATA drive?????

Hey everyone,

I put in my second SATA drive and everytime i have the drive connected the machine looks like it's going to boot up fine, gets to the black Windows XP screen, then restarts. I'm not sure what's causing this exactly - having a hard time identifying it. Below is my setup.

ASUS A8V-E Deluxe mobo / Athlon 64 3000+ proc

Primary Drive: WD Raptor - SATA
Slave Drive: Maxtor - IDE (Jumper set to SLAVE)
Second Slave: WD Caviar - SATA (this is the one i'm having problems with)

Everything works fine until i plug the second SATA drive into the second SATA port.

Have you looked into the BIOS for the HDD boot order?
Which drive has WinXP installed?
What is on the second SATA hdd?
have you tried with just boot drive and SATA drive?

The IDE drive isn't my primary - it's used strictly as a storage device. My primary drive is SATA.

Slaves need masters..
 
Since the IDE drive is the only IDE drive, it needs to be set to Master and your Raptor set to boot off of first.

My bad the IDE was already set on Master. The raptor is set as the primary boot drive, but when i plug in the second SATA drive it all goes to hell. Same problem as before.
 
Check to see if the boot order is changing the BIOS with the second SATA drive plugged in.
 
I gave up on this issue for quite a while, and today decided i'm either fixing it or toss'ing it. Anyway, long story short my motherboard doesn't support SATA II. I had to use the jumper on the HD to force it to use 150 mb. Works perfectly now.
