Can't uninstall Catalyst in Safe Mode

For some reason, if I uninstall Catalyst in regular Window, it will give me a BSOF. Now I want to update to the latest 10.10 and could not uninstall the existing 10.9 in Safe Mode.

Any suggestions?

I suspect the BSOF is induced by the MSI software: Afterburner, Tweaker or......

I am running a pair of MSI HD 5870 Crossfire in Win 7 Ultimate 64.
 
If you do manage to somehow get them to uninstall, you'll most likely get an error trying to go back to the previous drivers. I tried going from 10.10's back to 10.4 and pretty much hard to reformat to get the damn drivers to install. No amount of reg cleaning driver sweeping temp file deleting saved my OS...it's sad when it's less time consuming to reformat than keep trying to figure out ATIs screw up.

nope. But it just took me hell of a time to fix it (Win restore, uninstall and install the Catalyst, etc).

Why are you uninstalling? The recommended method for ATi/AMD is to install over the top.
 
I went to install 10.10 yesterday and had this as well. Mine was tied to my Displaylink software though. I uninstalled Displaylink in safemode and unplugged my USB monitor, then Windows booted fine. (I then reinstalled the second monitor without a hitch)

I haven't had this problem before.

blame that on windows for auto installing the ATI drivers instead of the old fashion generic drivers like it use to do in windows xp.

I follow those instructions and always uninstall the prior version of drivers, but that's just me. I do the same with my nvidia drivers.

I'd go into safe mode, and hand delete the AMD files (not sure if the AMD uninstaller works in safe mode) then run drivercleaner a couple times. Restart and install 10.10.
 
found the fix! at least....

Still had the BSOF in the middle of uninstalling Catalyst 10.9 and it broke my heart. After that, Win7 could not be loaded in normal fashion. It stuck in Windows opening (when four balloons matches). So I went to Safe Mode and used Driver Sweeper 2.1.0 (thank you!) to clean out the leftover ATI drivers junk. I had to sweeper few times (sweep and reboot, sweep and reboot, etc) to make sure nothing has left. Then reboot from "Last known good Configuration". Ok, successfully back to normal Win7 environment and used Win to uninstall Catalyst 10.9 again. Then, installed Catalyst 10.10.......

No, but I seem to recall the driver team (Terry?) saying that was the best method. Maybe he was referring to Vista.

I'm pretty sure it doesn't tell you to run Driversweeper tho'. Less mucking around with that would stop a lot of issues for people.
 
Wait, are you supposed to uninstall your graphics card drivers before installing new ones? I've always just installed the new ones over the old and never had a problem.
