Can't send a private message?

I signed up so I could contact someone about a post they made-- I'd like to find out the brand/model of something someone posted. I'm trying to send them a private message and when I click send it goes right back to my private message inbox and the message never sends. I have nothing in my sent items folder.

Why can't I send private messages?
