I'm trying to remove quicktime from my macbook because VLC is a superior option. I have tried setting VLC as the default player multiple times and it does not 'save' my preference. How can I boot quicktime off or make sure that my VLC choice preference 'sticks'.

I think quicktime is a part of os x like wmp is a part of windows and would not recommend removing it.

Last I knew QT was like DirectX....removing it entails killing your OS.
