I can't seem to get my dvd's to play. Computer slows to a crawl when I try. I can play games and others cd's, but not dvds. I have two dvd drives and tried both with the same problem. I have a Sony 710a and Samsung SH-S182M on an AMD64 3700+, Gigabyte GA-k8u-939 2 gigs of RAM, Creative Sound Blaster Audigy2 ZS, and a Geforce 6600GT. Used different programs such as VLC, Nero, WMP, etc.

Is DMA enabled? Go to Device Manager, and remove all your IDE channels. Reboot and let Windows redetect them.

do you have a DVD codec, aka a program that will actually let you watch DVD movies?

WinXP does not have one by default. You need a commercial one such as WinDVD, PowerDVD, etc etc to actually watch DVD movies on XP.

edit: N/m forget this post. VLC should have done the trick.

Are you getting choppy playback or zero playback at all? If its choppy, then its DMA... if no playback at all, then its a codec issue.

I ended up having to reformat my drive this past weekend. That seemed to fix the problem of dvd's not playing. Now, they will play without stalling up my system. But, the problem I'm having now is the picture is really dark and not choppy.

Try Media Player Classic. It uses its own built-in codec for DVDs IIRC.

I don't think so I think it simply piggybacks off of the DVD codec you have installed provided you have one installed. There would have been pratically no reason to ever have Win DVD or Power DVD at all had this ever been the case even with 98-XP.

I have had similar problems and it turned out to be video card driver issues, i had to get older drivers.

Try getting different drivers.

Ok, I got it. I should have checked the gamma in the video area of my video card software. I feel so dumb for not checking that. :(
