Hey everybody,

So i got new parts for my pc and got it up and running. I have a amd 3500+ venice core processor, a Gigabyte GA-K8N Pro-SLI motherboard and 2* 512mb of consair value select ram (it doesnt make sense me telling you what else i have with my computer as it has nothing to do with overclocking). I do know how to overclock my processor as i have done it before on a different computer, but well with this motherboard, when i done a google search the motherboard doesnt really let you overclock your processor :mad:. Well i can overclock using gigabytes program easytune but i hate that because you lose it all when you restart. When i try overclocking in the bios i can only put it up to 210 fsb with 5 HT, anything over that it freezes during the post screen then it just restarts. The only way i can overclock properly is by lowering the HT from 5 to 2 and then i can overclock the processor as much as i want to :confused:.

So my question to you all is, can anybody give me any thing to try out because i really want to overclock my processor again. And also if i set my HT to 2 and then my fsb to whatever and multiplier to whatever to get a higher overclock with a lower HT will it matter?? Because i overclocked before with this motherboard with the HT set to 2 and sucessfully overclocked from 2.2ghz to 2.4ghz but i didnt notice any speed increase or anything.

I am completely stomped of what to do any suggestions or advice towards this problem will be greatly apreciated.

what GPU do you have, as that can be OC'd too.

As for your situation, get rid of the EasyTune, and do this:

1) Go into BIOS and set HT at 5x
2) set DRAM Configuration to Automatic (for time being)
3) start compy and boot to Windows, and DL a freeware program called ClockGEN (google it)
4) Run ClockGEN and run the PLL setup (if you have NF4 chipset, skip this as the PLL is pre installed)
5) Run "Clock" program so you can see your clock speed realtime
6) Up the slider in PLL Control a little at a time.
7) After you set that, Open internet pages (3 or 4 at a time) and see if it holds steady or locks up)

After all that, if you reach a point where you cant upclock without a freeze, time to mess with memory timings. Good article for that stickied to the top of Memory forum. See if that doesnt help you. After you up the memory, the CPU should be able to go up more. So go up (switching back and forth between RAM and CPU) until U get a stable mix with good performance between the RAM and CPU speeds. Hope this helps

PS: The memory and CPU are dependant on one another so if you up one, you have to up the other, or it will crash *raises hand* :D

Thats sorta bad, as the processor clock(x)HTT speed = true clock speed. If you went to 2.6 clock on a 2x HTT, you werent at 2.6Ghz. The point of OC is to make the HTT (FSB) speed as high as possible, as that is the commumication bandwidth every component has to use to talk to the CPU. More bandwidth = faster response......make sense?? Keep that HTT at 5x like I mentioned above.

Allright i done what you said it worked out good. Successfully overclocked processor from 2.2ghz to 2.4ghz with 11* multiplier 220 fsb. I was doing it just now and i couldnt up the speed anymore it stopped at 2250mhz so i rebooted and put up the voltage in the bios and all is good now. I will overclock the processor faster later on maybe to like 2.8ghz i was just testing see if this works temps are cool, they are the same, 33 degrees C with no load with stock cooling. Thanks for the help. The stupid :rolleyes: thing is that i have to use this program and i cant use the bios stupid gigabyte.

Just noticed this is a little messed up because now when i start windows i have slower start up times because for me to overclock i have to lower ram timings, and multiplier, because this is a software overclocking utility and not in the bios, but well that dont matter at least i can overclock now.
 
Thats odd, you have to lower RAM timings to OC??? I'd call mobo tech support and check on that, as like i said before, AMD chips are very dependant on RAM timings for performance increases......Glad it worked!!!! :D

Yeah i have to lower my ram divider sorry i didnt mean to say ram timings, i have to lower it because if my ram goes above 220mhz then computer crashes. I got it at 2.5ghz right now, i cant overclock it no higher than 2.6ghz right now because i dont understand ram timings and the next ram divider under the one i have now is to low, my ram will be operating much slower. And temps are still pretty cool 34 degrees C stock cooling with no load, and 45C with full load.

I cannot keep the HTT multiplier at 5. I run mine at 3. The spec for the HTT is 1000mhz. The HTT link speed is calculated by HTT multiplier x fsb. A 240 FSB x 2 = 480. That's too low. You want this speed to be as close to 1000mhz as you can get it.

I disagree with the point of the OC to make the HTT speed as high as possible. There are very few components on the board that require a high HTT speed. The HD and PCI bus are both limited by PCI speeds... (well not really, all HD's are still limited by spindle RPMs.) and the GPU works off the PCIe bus, which communicates through the northbridge. the PCIe bus (a 16x lane) has a thoughtput of 4gbps up and down... That's HUGE. I can guarentee you're not using any more than maybe 1.5gbps on that (again, I'm unsure about this).

AMD processors have an on-die memory controller. Raising the FSB to huge levels will have very little impact on RAM speed if your overall clock speed is low (ie, running 400FSB at a 3x multiplier). The RAM communicates with the CPU directly, thus the reason the AM64 platform is an amazing performer.

Consider the post on the official AMD forum. Look at the difference between older K7 CPU's (where FSB = better performance) and the newer K8 (the 2nd diagram) to see what I mean.

AMD performance is strictly based upon clock speeds:ram timings... The RAM has a thoughput of 6.8gbps at 200mhz. When's the last time you've swapped out 7gb of data in 1 second :D.

Drop the HTT to 4x if you're clocking your FSB under 250. Anything more than 250FSB drop it to 3x. If you're unstable considering upping the NB voltage, your RAM voltage, running a RAM divider (DDR333 or DDR667 if you're on an AM2)

About that divider, because lowering the divider allowed you to OC, I say it's a case of poor-performing RAM. Consider running at the DDR333 setting (83% of the DDR400 setting) and upping the FSB to 243... That'll run your ram at about 201mhz...

Yea, kick your HTT down to 3x or 4x... If you run at 5x and try overclocking, you'll get a freeze or reboot every time with PC3200 ram.


You'll want your HTT to equal less than 1000mhz...

FSB x HTT = less than 1000mhz

So if your FSB is at 200mhz with a 5x HTT, you have 1000mhz, but if you overclock to 210mhz x 5x HTT, you are over your limits... back it to a 4x HTT and it'll probably work in this scenario.

Try 210 fsb with a 4x HTT, this will equal 840 which is good. In fact, you can logically hit 250 fsb with a x4 HTT before you start seeing problems and potentially have to step to a 3x HTT...

Make Sense???

So now you understand how a processor gets it's speed rating. Great, but how do you raise that speed?

Well, the most common method of overclocking is through the BIOS. The BIOS can be reached by pressing a variety of keys while your system is booting up. The most common key to get into the BIOS is the Delete key, but others may be used such as F1, F2, any other F button, Enter, and some others. Before your system starts loading Windows (or whatever OS you have), it should have a screen that will tell you what button to use at the bottom.

Once you are in the BIOS, assuming that you have a BIOS that supports overclocking*, you should have access to all of the settings needed to overclock your system. The settings that you will most likely be adjusting are:

Multiplier, FSB, RAM Timings, RAM Speed, and RAM Ratio.

On a very basic level, all you are trying to do is to get the highest FSB x Multiplier formula that you can achieve.

Im at 1340 FSB according to that equation so..........

Anyway, I have a Gigabyte mobo too.

Do these things:

1. Press Ctrl + F1 in BIOS.
2. Go to the 'Motherboard Intelligent Tweaker'
3. Apply these settings:

CPU Spread Spectrum = Disable
PCIE Clock = 101Mhz
Robust Graphics Booster = Auto

Also, make sure the RAM is in manual mode. What I mean is that the ratios should say 2/2 or something and not Auto. Nothing should say Auto!

Also, keep the HTT under 2000Mhz. So HTT x HTT Multi < 1000. When OC'ed, the HTT multi should be set to 4 or whatever suits.
 
Could that also be why you are sitting at 2.28ghz with a 2.0ghz processor? Not trying to flame or troll, but what I've tried (and read) works...

Overclocking Technique

You are essentially in control of the speeds of four frequencies; the CPU speed, the memory bus, the HTT, and the HyperTransport bus. Overclocking the CPU is done pretty much as it always has been, except that the HTT substitutes the front side bus.

The HTT can almost always go just as high as you need it, granted that you don’t exceed the motherboard’s maximum supported HyperTransport speed by too much. For systems that support a 1000MHz HyperTransport data rate, for example, one could use a 200MHz HTT with a 5x LDT multiplier. However, using 5x250 would result in an effective 1250MHz, which would almost certainly lead to instability. The LDT could be dropped to 4x, allowing for a higher HTT speed with stability, 250, but resulting in the same 1000MHz HyperTransport data rate as default. The HTT being increased alone doesn’t accomplish anything; unlike increasing the front side bus does other platforms. Even raising the HyperTransport speed doesn’t add any noticeable increase in performance, as the bus is already so wide, that saturating it isn’t very likely. For this reason, the nF3 250’s and 150’s perform quite similarly to one another. My suggestion would be to leave the HyperTransport speed at as close to stock as possible, and raise the HTT only as much as necessary. Unless you’re using an 8x multiplier, there shouldn’t be much reason to go far above 300MHz in many cases.

alright folks, im big enough to admit when im wrong, and I'll be a monkeys uncle, I was wrong.......

I went thru and reclocked using the suggestions above. I have a modest OC of 2.35Ghz (235Mhz with a 10X multi) with a FSB of 941.2, and a HT multi of 4X.......CPU voltage was set to 1.42V and memory was bumped to 2.75V. Usually I would bump voltage, and boom it'd freeze. Now all is good. I can go to 2.4Ghz but its a hair unstable. I will mess later on when I have time to see if I can find the issue. Thanks anyways guys. I always thought the FSB had to be maxed out due to the quote I showed you all. Thanks again for making my rig better :D

Nice so far!! I'm wondering if your x2 can do the 2.5ghz and above like I've been reading. Try setting a 166mhz (83%) divider on you memory. What are your timings, reason I ask is because I have PC4000 as well, but have a 166 divider. Default timings for me is 3-3-3-8, but I have it set to 2.5-3-3-6 due to the divider setting it to lower speeds (hence the chips can run the tighter timings).

So you can either loosen your timings and run a 1:1 ratio at higher speeds....
Or, you can run a divider (if not already) and run tighter timings...

Need to remember if you run a divider, (for example a 166mhz divider), your ram is basically running at PC3200 speeds, so you have ALOT more headroom there for overclock via the FSB. Once you get clodser to the DDR 500 threshold, you may have to set your HTT to x3 for stability. (This is why we get PC4000 / DDR 500 in the first place!)

timings are 2.5-2-2-5-2T @ 2.75V @ 400Mhz (PC-3200 speed)

I have no devider. Im curious on this. What setting would I look for in the BIOS on my Asus board??? Need to know so I wont mess something up. other than that im cool with playing and seeing what works. So wider timings and a devider will allow a higher clock??? Thnx. This is stuff ive been wondering, and if it helps attain higher clocks, then cool.

On my Asus board I have a submenu with the word DRAM in it... under the CPU config tab (not the jumperfree tab). Course, yours might be different but I doubt it. Select the DDR333 option, that'll allow your ram to run as if it were tagged at 166mhz FSB. This DRAM speed option is in the same panel as where it summarizes current CPU speed, voltage and temp...

Use the DDR333 and up your FSB to about 242... 10x multiplier with stock voltage. I'm sure you'll post as your RAM is running JUST over 200mhz... (your processor at 2.42ghz). The DDR226 setting (I believe) should be the next lower one... If you're able to post your board at 300FSB or higher, then you could potentially use this setting... Your RAM would be running at about 170mhz (DDR340) so you could use some really tight timings... 2-2-2-5. If your board wont post over 285mhz (most wont) FSB then stay at the DDR333 setting and either be happy at about 2.42ghz or get better RAM.

Obviously, you need to find the best balance between RAM frequency settings (try to get it to 200mhz or MORE), RAM timings and CPU timings. AMD cpus rely on fast memory timings and pure clock speed. It's OK to run your ram at 180mhz rather than 200mhz if you're getting an extra 400mhz out of the CPU. As I said, these cpu's have an AMAZING ability to push data from the CPU to the RAM, a bandwidth so large I can guarentee you'll probably never use it. On the other hand, your system can only do calculations as fast as your CPU is running.

Right now I'm able to take my CPU to 270FSB x 9.5 (ewww I know, half dividers) with a small 0.05v bump in Vcore... I'm sure you too can do this on an Asus (and even a gigabyte) board.

Make sure you have the PCI and PCIe busses locked, if you havn't done so already.

Hey again, i do know how to overclock and all of that, and i do know that my HT should be no lower than about 3 because you want to keep it as close as you can to 1000 but well with this particular motherboard if i have a HT multi of 3-5 and my FSB raised from 200 to 215 it will not boot it freezes at the post screen.

I would possibly start looking for another motherboard. Off the top of my head I can't think of anything else for you to try. My board is funny too (Biostar T-Force), it will not allow anything much over 255-260ish, so I'm limited to a 2.8-2.9ghz overclock.

Maybe a BIOS flash to an updated BIOS, or possibly a modded BIOS out there that enables more advanced features.

Hey there, I was just thinking if there was a setting in your BIOS which has something to do with NB->SB and SB->NB. Mine has one with setting from 1x up to 5x. If you have this setting IN ADDITION to your HTT setting, you will need to lower it as well to 3x or 4x, depending on your overclock. Also, a slight chipset voltage increase may help you out too.

Hey again, i dont know i have tried everything you guys said on here, and i am still having no luck. I can overclock in windows but in the bios it just fails, its really stupid how gigabyte did this if you ask me. Its so wierd because everything to overclock in the bios is in there but as soon as i try go and change something:

I dont know whats up because some people, who have this same motherboard dont have the looping problem, they get rid of it by taking things off automatic, but i take all the things related to overclocking off automatic and still encounter the same problems. I guess its okay though because i dont really need to overclock my computer i have 1 gig of ram and my processor is @ 2.2ghz stock. So its pretty cool, i mainly use my computer for gaming anyway and basically the only game i play is BF2 and my specs are good enough to run that and i most likely will not be playing BF2 after the new one comes out and i am not going to get the new one either, so i guess my computer is fine for now.

But anywho thanks for the help everyone if u can think of anything else for me to try, go ahead and say ill try anything right now. :D
 
Anything? Do you have an older processor lying around? Preferably a socketed P1 chip...

Try wrapping it in palm leaves and douse it in lighter fluid. Offer it, aflame, to the overclocking gods... Yell three times, "Ever merciful Gods of Overclocking, bestow upon me all thy knowledge of the Northbridge the Southbridge and the PLL Controller" Who knows, maybe they'll hear you.

Of course, the better the sacrifice, the more likely they'll be to help you.

Seriously, though... Does clockgen work under windows? I believe clockgen has an "Apply settings on startup" option.

Yeah clockgen does work well under windows, i can overclock good and all but with clockgen you can not change the memory divider and all of that, so i have slower start up times, and you can not change voltage and cpu multipler and so on i will have to do that stuff in the bios.

I dont want to use a software overclocking utility because yesterday i was using clockgen and my video card started to act up, i had to reinstall my video card drivers but now it seems all good of course thats not the only reason i dont want to use software overclocking utilitys.

What i would really love to find out is what does the software overclocking utilites diable to allow me to overclock, or is it just because i am overclocking in the operating system the programs do not have to change anything through the bios. :confused:
