Can't overclock my 460gtx

What GTX460 is it? Increased voltage? Maybe default is too low to get anything out of.
You wont necessarily be able to overclock it by the way, don't expect everything to be able to clock well or at all.

I tried every possible program and they all show different values for clocks (and they don't make sense) and none of them have any effect when I change the values. I RMA'd it and the new one I got still has the same problem. Here's a screenshot:

what's going on?

WTF they allowed you to RMA because you cried about not being able to overclock?

No way.. Did you lie to get the RMA?

wtf? MSI has the shader and core backwards and I assume those numbers are not actually what you are running because Nvidia has 2:1 and that says 1800 and 810. GPUtool is reporting 1800 for core clock and 675 for the memory which makes no sense. gpu-z seems to be reporting all normal stock clock speeds.

maybe try another software, nvtune?

I tried every possible program

So you RMA'D your card because it won't overclock? Bah, what a waste..

Benchmarks show this card can run stable at 30% overclock, I don't consider that a waste.

I don't have control of the voltages but this shouldn't affect the ability to change the clocks. I can't overclock it at all.

I have seen reviews all over the net of people overclocking their 460gtx so why can't I oc mine

No you wasted company time and funds because you think you deserve a 30 percent overclock which is beyond arrogant.

Let me guess you think it is also ok to RMA CPUs that don't unlock as well right?

I tell you what is a waste.. This topic.. of Hardforum's bandwidth.

hmm... this is a hardware forum? If you have nothing intelligent to say maybe you should go to a cooking forum and troll people there instead.

What kind of system did you install it in?

What type of motherboard?

What is the exact model of your Power Supply?

What temps are you getting with the 460.

I've never purchased a videocard that can't overclock. Even if by a little. I think something else is involved here. It's probably not the card since the 2nd one also doesn't overclock.

i5 760
gigabyte gigabyte p55m-ud2
corsair 750tx

Temps are normal, between 35 and 50, everything is brand new, I tried to reformat twice, and I tried older nvidia drivers, no luck.

Any ideas on how to fix this would be appreciated, I'm no computer newb but the solution to this problem really puzzles me.

You acted as if it was completely normal to RMA a working card because you could not overclock it.

My CPU cant unlock on stock voltage do I deserve a RMA?

I have to turn the fan up on my video card. Do I deserve an RMA?

And frankly I do not believe you told them that the return was due to failure to overclock. No way in hell would they give you an RMA for that. And if a particular model failed to overclock anyway there would be topics raising cane over it. Not one person walking in here saying

I RMA'd it and the new one I got still has the same problem.

Maybe next time don't barge in here, announce you cost a company funds RMAing a working card and then saying "What's going on?" Anyone who cares to help you after what you pulled does so on their own free time.

Sir, do you have some kind of personal issue to be so mad at people in forums who are just looking for help

And I don't know where you come from with that deserving a RMA thing, it was a genuine concern that my video card could be broken returning false readings like that, and unless you have a solution to explain this you would have come to the same conclusion.

I will refer you to this page http://www.zotacusa.com/support/warranty where you can read "Even for those of you who know how to push our Products to the limits, if anything goes wrong, we will service it free of charge providing all aftermarket modifications are reversed prior to sending in the product for repair or replacement."

Good day, and stop dirtying my thread with pointless remarks

Is your system overclocked? CPU/RAM etc...

In the meantime;

Check your bios settings, make sure primary video is set to pcie
Try the card in the second pcie slot since you hve more than one just for shits and giggles
Make sure to install the latest motherboard chipset drivers.
Look for and install any bios updates available from gigabyte.

hey....you sound like this is an issue close to your heart.....have you worked in an RMA department before??? ;););)

Turns out I was able fix it by updating MSI Afterburner, I had no idea it was outdated, now it shows the right values. As for nTune it still crashes and GPU Tool still doesn't work, but at least I can do it with MSI. I'm sure Zachstar will be enraged at reading this :p Thanks for everyone's help.

You really love trolling don't you? Anything useful to add? Nope , didn't think so.

I would do a complete driver clean (however you prefer method wise) and try once more , if you still can't it might be a BIOS lock on the video card.

A 1 day member who suddenly "Knows" me. Ok

I don't work in an RMA department I just remember reading topics full of idiots RMAing AMD Cpus that wont unlock and acting like it was just nothing. Personally I think Unlocking is wrong anyway. But RMAing a working product because it wont unlock/overclock is just wrong.

The moment it becomes "Normal" is when they rush to add new RMA policies that makes it harder on the rest of us. Newegg having to react to the idiot RMAing unlockers is an example.

TBH, the MSI cyclone is sold with overclocking/overvolting as an official feature. If MSI's own overclocking program doesn't work with it for some reason, I'd say it's a fair reason to RMA.

I am not suggesting that a particular clock speed, or any clock speed higher than stock should be guaranteed. I am saying that you should be able to move the sliders around in MSI Afterburner and have it physically change the core speed of the card, even if it locks up or BSODs or whatever.

I'm with Zachstar on this one.
The card not OCing prolly relates to deficient karma, but if that is not the cause, perhaps you should try to fraudulently RMA the card again.

Edit: Never buy expecting an OC. You will eventually be disappointed. Submitting an item for RMA because it will not OC, is fraud unless you tell them the reason for the RMA is that it will not OC.

Doesn't the RMA have to be approved? I doubt he just mailed it back expecting a new card out of nowhere.

Not only does it need to be approved but you need an RMA number to ship it to the right department most of the time and it needs to be displayed on the front of the shipping container.

Maybe the problem is not with the card, but with the user. You are doing something wrong.
