I had posted something similar before but I couldnt find my post.
I have my AMD Barton 2600+ overclocked to 185mhz fsb stable... but if I tried to push further say 195mhz 3Dmark will freeze. I dont think its overheating, because when I overclock I usually crank my fan to high. Is it my memory settings? My memory is PC3200 so it should be able to handle a fsb of 400..
Is it the voltage of my cpu? Its at the stock 1.6v I dont really want to raise that but if it can get me higher then ill be happy.

Oh and anyone here have experience overclocking a DFI nforce2 400 AL? its not that lanparty or that er infinity thing... I have no idea if my cpu is locked becasue it actually doesnt even have a multiplyer setting. I can raise the fsb there though. (currently using clockgen [whats so bad about it? I overclock when I encode or play a gameleave it at default when I dont need as much power])

most likely, it's your core voltage, increase it to about 1.8, as long as you don't go over about 1.925, you're probably going to be safe.

You want to tweak one component at a time. Don't try to get the fastest CPU overclock, FSB overclock, and memory timings all at once. Relax your memory timings a good bit and crank the FSB until it isn't stable, then back off a couple mHz. Then overclock your CPU until it isn't stable and back it off a notch. Then mess with timings.

It's too hard to do it all at once because any one of the three things could be holding you back. It could be the CPU isn't getting enough voltage, the Northbridge needs more voltage, the memory just won't run that fast, etc.

I dont know how to overclock my cpu by itself I assume it isnt possible with my board... so I have been trying to do FSB overclocks only.
When you say "Relax your memory timings a good bit and crank the FSB until it isn't stable" what does that mean? Any reccomended relaxed timings?

First off, unless you have an unlocked CPU, you can't really do anything except change the FSB.

Second off, the only way to really get a good OC is to change the FSB. :p

I'd suggest relaxed timings, and start at stock everything. Slowly increase your FSB, 2-4 mhz at a time. Each time, let windows load and run a benchmark. Then, reboot and do it again. Continue until you find instability. Increase your core voltage until you get it stable again. Now, back to the FSB. 2-4 mhz again, until eventually, you either hit 400 fsb, or your chip is running at 1.95v. Mine is. :p 1.95 isn't going to kill your chip unless you have bad cooling. I have some really good cooling, so it's somewhat okay for me. I also happen to have a very early stepping Barton (week 17). You'll probably surpass my chip with less voltage. ;) I've got mine running at 2.3 ghz. 51c is my load temp. :p

Once you get past 400 fsb, you're going to have to worry about your RAM. You will either need to feed it more voltage, or lower timings.

i had a similar problem with my xp1700

200fsb wasnt liked by the ram , but then maybe pushing this little
chip from 266 to 400 fsb is the problem .

anyhow memtest 86+ has a halt error 25% into the test (FeFeFeFe) , but strangley , not when i set fsb to 194 (1:1 ram )

no errors running ram at 400 and fsb at 333 either

any ideas?

Most AMD mobos crap out around 400 DDR FSB. Unless you give your chipset more voltage and better cooling, you're stuck.

1.6V is the issue, it's just not enough. Try at least 1.75V and see what you get. I'm running an unlocked 2500+ @ 1.75V (the most my mobo will do) 12.5 X 166 with a mediocre HSF and my temps are OK and it's stable (been running Prime95 torture test nonstop for several days now).

Okay thanks for the advice ill increase the voltage and see what I get.

AAGH.
Okay.. I cant increase my voltage  it seems DFI really made my board to be more limited I guess to make their lanparty or Ultra something more appealing.
The bios shows the voltage but its grayed out and only shows 1.6 volts BUT I can increase the voltage to the ram. I never heard of overvolting ram so I think thats pointless its at 2.6volts right now.

Btw no more board mods blew up intel 845 board taht way.

You can pin mod to change the V. Make sure you check the actual V before you start pounding on it though, as when I tried this for V, I got 1.8V when I was going for 1.7 or so... YMMV. Since your chip is locked, the multiplier changing this way is out, but I use it with success on an unlocked chip. The way I did it was with individual strands of IDE wire (strip the insulation of a wire and then pick off a single strand.. be careful, as the strands puncture skin quite easily (I managed to get a strand stuck into my finger when picking it up... pulled out OK, but still...)) bent in a "U" and dropped into the socket (using "Socket View"). Note that when you remove the CPU the wires stand a very good chance of dislodging.

Hrmm interesting site.. thanks for that info but I cant afford to attempt that mod. :( I had attempted to change the fsb on my compaq and it never booted again (about 2 months ago) so this is a relatively new board/cpu that I guess I will just overclock to 185fsb I guess its a decent overclock.

What a coincidence... the comp I did the pin mod on is a Compaq. Pulled the 2400+ (to be used elsewhere) and put in a 1700+ (B core) at 14.5 X 133 (yes, 0.5 lower than the 2400+, but getting the Compaq faster wasn't really the goal). It's been up for ages now... probably hasn't been rebooted for at least a couple of months, but, on the other hand, it isn't one of my most used computers.

I certainly can understand not wanting to nuke hardware when you haven't much to spare... Heck, I've got plenty to spare, but I still don't want to nuke anything.

Yeah.. so 185fsb is good enuff its almost equivalent to a 3000+

It took me a while but I am amused how limited this DFI bios is sheez. FSB oc yes but no voltage settings sigh.
