can't keep 820 temps low

i've applied 2 different coats of artic 5 (by applying a bb gun amount in the middle and immediately putting the heatsink over it), and my processor temperatures still boot at 80C and slowly climb past 110 until the computer shuts itself off.

What should i do? Should i just return it to intel if possible?

I haven't tried another heatsink because i don't have one, nor do i want to buy one ATM (this heatsink sucks but should still keep it cool)
 
Make sure you're pushing all four plastic clips in until they "snap" and the black part goes through the white nozzle part. It's the worst heatsink design I've ever dealt with, but it works (after a miserable battle.) It should bring you down to about 57-60C idle and 65-68C load.

do i have to reapply the thermal paste every time i attempt this?

well i just pushed down on the fan super hard and my temps have made a dramatic drop to 65 in the bios........should i reapply again or is this temp good enough?

If i should apply again, could you give tips how to apply the paste/put on heatsink? Are you supposed to press down on the fan part to smoosh the paste between the CPU/heatsink, or just snap the corners in the mobo and not press down on the fan?

No.It's idiotic to smoosh th epaste with the cooler.

Clean the thermal pad and the heatspreader carrefully with alcohol.Once you've done that apply a very thin but uniform layer of paste over the heatspreader by using a card for example to level it.
Be sure that it gets pure flat , no voids or anything like that.

Carrefully mount the cooler , be sure to have the screws over the holes and press firmly until it clicks.Doing in a cross like fashion :

You press A,D,B,C.

Make sure you don't do any circular motion with the cooler after put it on the HS.

Thirdly have at least 1 case exhaust low rpm cooler.It really helps.

Not so much. Artic Silver's instructions explicity state to let the heatsink spread the thermal paste over the heat spreader when you press it down.

You are correct with this statement but I have acheived much better results by spreading it uniformly accross the IHS.
 
Get a better HSF.

My recommendation:

Thermalright XP90c + Panaflo H/O 92mm fan + AS5 =

CPU Idle: 33c
CPU Load: ~44-46c

I can't imagine your temps are that low on a dual core air cooled prescott. Do Asus boards still read low on temps?

Those temps were measured with an external temperature probe. They are accurate. Ambient room temp was 70F.

What was your temp reported by your motherboard? I'm curious where you put your external probe, it seems to be that you'll be measuring either the temperature of the heatsink or, at very best, the temperature of the IHS, either of which is going to be lower than that of the core.

I measured from the IHS which is at most 1-3 degrees C lower than the core. The IHS is in direct contact with the CPU core. The BIOS reported temps 2 degrees Celsius higher than the probe.
 
ok, i reapplied and this time i am sure i placed the HSF fan 100% correctly (snapped two of mounts in. The other two wouldn't make a snap sound, but i know they're in.)


My temperatures still remain at bios: 63-64C

I'll get a new heatsink when i get a new motherboard and i think i'll leave it like this for now. Is this temperature good enough for the time being?

Why? It takes no more than 45 minutes to remove your Mobo, replace it with an aftermarket HSF that needs to have a bracket in place on the backside of the mobo to secure it and then reinstall your mobo in the case. The results will make you very happy.

if i could make an aftermarket HSF appear out of thin air, i would be more than happy to put in the 15 minutes it takes to do this......but they aren't free (unless you can suggest a good cheap one)

edit- i installed windows and speedfan, and it reads 57-58......could the bios be wrong, or does speedfan always read lower than it actually is?

Not idiotic, its the proper way. Its no better when you smear it around like some of you do, when you follow the arctic silver instructions to the T it makes a perfect seal. This will be debated forever though, since some people swear they get better temps by "using a credit card" or what not to make a thin application all over the heatspreader.

I just do the dot and smush, but I don't have heatspreaders on an of my chips... I must say that it is much simpler doing it that way! :cool:

How much can you spend?

The Thermalright XP90 can be had for under $30. Add a fan and it is like $37 shipped.
