ok, this isnt the usual "it doesnt detect my HD" post, i boot to the xp cd, then hit f6, and wait to ask for the driver. i load up the driver, and it goes through its usual routine. when i come time to start installing windows the computer just shuts off. ive gotten father once, i got to format the HD with ntfs, and then it restarted normally, then it copied the windows files from the cd. then when i got to actually install windows from the HD, it boots up, and i get an error and it shuts down. the offending program is lsass.exe, with some generic error, which i dont recall off hand, but i know it doesnt matter anyway.

any one have a clue what going on here?

Are you sure it's the raptor and not some other component? Try the hard drive in another system, maybe even run a full surface scan on it to verify that it's in good shape. Also, WD should have diagnostics that you can download and run to check the drive out.

Assuming you've narrowed it down to only the raptor drive, don't forget that a lot of cables are pretty poor quality. if you can try a new hard drive cable, that might just fix it, and it wouldn't be the first time that a bad cable has caused headaches. Good luck.
 
i know that its the raptor that im using, and i doubt its the cable, since it brand new, it could be, but i dont exactly have any just lying around anyway. will download the WD utils and test the drive. thanks. anyone else.

So you HAVE tested it in another system, or no?

Also, more likely, the SIL3112 Serial ATA chip is a gigantic piece of crap. I've got one on my Gigabyte 7N400 Pro 2. The drivers for it blue screen the hell out of windows. unless they've done some MAJOR work on them, that's probably your problem right there.

I finally broke down and bought a promise fastrack Serial ATA PCI card, and havn't had a single problem since.
 
Is the machine overclocked? I have to back down my OC to stock speeds when I install a new harddrive or format my existing one. It must not be happy without the drivers installed before raising my FSB.
 
You might try rolling your mobo bios back to d20, there are some boot problems with d21 and up. I had a similar problem, and this made it work. I had to install windows twice, tho. Once on an IDE drive and once on the sata raid stripe

edit: I just realized that I have almost the same system as you. XP2400+M, NF7-S, XP Pro SP1. I have my 2400+ at 12.5x200 1.7v. I think it may go higher, but I'm still installing stuff, and I don't want it to die while installing.
 
If the above suggestions fail (and I expect v3rt1g0 most likely has already told you what the problem is) , try installing windows with the raptor ouside of your case with a fan blowing on it to keep it cool.

If it installs this way (and that could be possible as you said it has reached different stages of the install), your hard drive is more or less defective. Even if it works with the extra cooling now it will fail prematurely. So if this is the case, return + exchange. Some hard drives of the same type produce more heat than others.

running tests on it now

it doesnt get very hot, about as hot as i would expect it to get, and barely hotter than my 7200 drives... so i rule heat out.

i am running the mobile proc at stock 2500 speeds (1.83) with 2.5 2 2 7 timings on my 3200 at 2700


i havent tested it in another computer, but i know that it works, i think that its just the driver so im going to go ahead with that after updating the bios and testing the shit outa the drive.

ok, it just passed the quick WD test, going for extended test.
 
ok, it passed the extended test, and i did a reset zeros for good measure, and it passed all of it.

updated bios and went to install xp... got bsod when accessing the HD. tried new drivers, BSOD

page fault in non paged area. Stop: 0x00000050 blah blah blah.

the raptor is outside of my case, and not overheating.

going to go back to the 20 bios, i just tried 23, which is the newest
 
tried loading the optimized defaults in the 23 bios, and now i dont get the bsod. formatting raptor now. we'll see what happens...
 
ok, its installing now. i guess the OC was too much, even though it was idling at 32c... thanks for all those who helped:)
