I actually have plain old WindowsXP. The only reason why I needed to upgrade is because I cannot install software for "VIA PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller" in order to run an external hard drive. After clicking recommended, it doesnt find anything to install. Microsoft articles state to download SP1 and my USB issues would be fixed..

Wether this fixes the problem or not I wont know since SP1 refuses to install due "the core system file (kernel) used to start this computer is not a microsoft windows file." I just need to get this friggen USB Enhanced Host controller thing resolved and every where I go, they want 30 bucks to scan my computer and upgrade my drivers for a year.

Any advice? Im pulling my hair out over this

Could be a virus or it could be a memory or hard drive problem.

Download a trial version of www.nod32.com and scan your computer.

It could also be bad memory/hard drive. Download the ultimate boot disk and check those things out.

A possibility that those drivers are on your motherboard driver CD? = likely.

The error message means what it says: some of the kernel files on your system don't match what Windows should have installed. You might have a virus or spyware that has modified the files or these files might have become corrupted after installation.

I think it's bath time for your rig.

Actually I have both of those installed, I removed them earlier today to see if it makes a difference and it did. The original message said that SP1 could not be installed because Ntoskrnl.exe was modified.

Im wondering if I can just find the drivers some where else? VIA PCI to USB Enhanced Host Controller is the only thing under my devices that has a yellow " ! " next to it. Im surfin around for it as we speak. If I cant find a resolution, I'll probably just return the external hard drive because there is no way I can wait to put files on it at the current speed. :( Thanks for the help/advice! :)

ps: i didnt exactly get XP from best buy

Huh? Where did you get it? I can't understand why you think different retailers would hand out different files.

I have the same exact problem with that via usb controller. It cant be fixed, its a microsoft problem that may be addressed in sp3 if released.Spent a month on the problem, then went out and bought pci usb2.0 card.

i'm suspecting an illegal/hacked/exploited XP key is being used here ...

If you google enough you will find alot of people pulling their hair out over this.I found plenty
