I've got an old Win98 system with a SB16. Its not much but it'll do for what my old man wants it for.

Now I get sound thru the headphones, but sound into the microphone isn't registering on the system. Any ideas people?

Yea, is the microphone turned on (if there is a switch).
If no switch, can you confirm it works in another computer.
If the mic is fine, make sure the software does not have the mic mutted (open up the windows volume control panel and make sure the mic is not muted, has the volume slider up to max, and if you have an option for volume boost, check it.

Did this fix it?

If not, your best guess is mine.
