Network setup:

Computer 1 (was the only computer for a long time): ISA 2004 SP2 / Domain Controller

Computer 2 (new): File server / exchange server / member of domain / IIS / RPC proxy

I installed IIS on the exchange server, and installed the RPC component. I followed the steps here:

http://www.petri.co.il/configure_rpc_over_https_on_a_single_server.htm

I'm not seeing any errors in the event log. I've confirmed from the firewall log that traffic on port 443 is going to computer 2. Computers that are VPN'd or on the LAN can get to exchange fine. OWA is working fine. The clients are running Outlook 2003 and XP SP2. I checked that http://mydomain/rpc gives a 401.3 as it should. On Computer 2 in the Application Event log, I even got this message:

Event Type: Information
Event Source: RPC Proxy
Event Category: Startup
Event ID: 3
Date: 5/20/2006
Time: 11:31:35 PM
User: N/A
Computer: COMPUTER2
Description:
RPC Proxy successfully loaded in Internet Information Services (IIS) mode 6.0.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

I just can't get Outlook 2003 to connect using RPC over HTTP.

One thing that left some room for clarity is this section near the bottom:

Configure all your global catalogs to use specific ports for RPC over HTTP for directory services

I performed the configuration through the GUI and got the stated message (no front-end). I didn't perform the manual steps though, since it says they are not needed if I used the GUI.

What am I missing here? Does Computer 2 have to be a global catalog and/or a domain controller? It's not a domain controller, and I didn't do any special configuration to make it a global catalog.

Problem solved: I needed to add the self-signed CA certificate to the client's trusted root CA list.
