I just got done with my first self built computer, everything runs fine and all but just doesnt have internet. I bought a switch and some cat5 cable and expected to just work but of course it can never be that easy for me :( . I have one computer that allready has internet(bought from store) and runs fine. But the self built one just cant get connected.
I tried running through wizards both manally and automatically but still doesnt work. So im wondering if anyone could give some help to me to figure out whats wrong and give some step by step instructions to what I need to do get it running properly.
Thanks. :)

You will probably need a router as opposed to the switch...because i am pretty sure your DSL/Cable company will only lease you one ip. (one ip = one computer w/ internet).

Get a router, for your safety...even a cheap one...that has NAT, so you are protected ;)

PS: "everything runs fine"...i am assuming, you installed drivers, and tested that the card works...etc...

:)

Allright I'll get a router instead of a switch and yes updated drivers and card runs doom3 fine. ( I put some drivers and put them on my mp3 player to transport them to the new one)
Thanks for help.

Make sure you have Internet Sharing Enabled on both pc's
I had that problme once when i first built my lan :p
I have Highspeed coming threw my Main Rig, and an Switch to the rest,
So it "should" work

NAT alone is not good protection. NAT is not a firewall.

He needs a consumer level router with stateful inspection. NAT will come as a consequence of sharing on Internet IP address with multipme machines on the inside of the network.
