Can't get a display

I'm building a new computer but I'm having a problem getting the video to show up. When I boot it up I get no display (monitor says to check signal cable) and then I get a long beep, followed by 2 short beeps which (according to computerhope.com) "indicates a video error has occurred and the BIOS cannot initialize the video screen to display any additional information"
I'm using an asus a8n-sli deluxe motherboard w/ a 3200 athlon 64 cpu, a gig of ddr400 ram and an x850 xt pe (also have a blank hd and dvd-drive ready to plug in, but I was advised that if it's not working I should strip it down to the essential components to isolate the problem instead of adding variables by introducing other components).
My first question is whether there's any compatibility issues w/ the chipset (nvidia nforce 4) and the graphics card, and if there is whether I can make it work or if I should just sell the card. If there are no compatibility issues, does anyone have any ideas as to how to make it display the video. Both the card and motherboard are new (recieved the motherboard a couple days ago and the graphics card today) so I don't think it's a problem w/ either component being bad.
 
make sure your video card has the proper power connections to it. There is no compatability problems with the NF4 chip and the ATI card...
 
Indeed, verrrrry important to connect the aux power dongle.

There should be an onboard video output on your mobo. Check it with your monitor. This will make sure that its not anything else besides your gfx card. If you have another video card, test the slot on the mobo - make sure the slot isn't cooked. Once you've checked the monitor/cable and the mobo, all that's left that could be DOA is your video card.

There can be some driver compatability problems, but not at this stage. No hardware compatability issues you should be concerned about.
