cant fix problem with video card

ok the Video Card im using is the 8800 GTS (640 mb) version. I had some crashing issues in MW2 so i downloaded and installed the latest drivers from nvidia. It seemed to initially fix the problem but no more than 5 minutes into a match i crashed again. After this my computer wouldnt boot into windows. It would get to the XP load screen with the little bar underneath the windows logo, and then reboot because there was a problem. Also when the computer is booting even to this point, i have these wierd multicolored lines that go up and down my screen. It only effects the left side of my screen and i know its not the monitor because if i change output res on my card the lines move with it.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the new drivers completely, also tried rolling back drivers but nothing has worked. I also re downloaded the file thinking something might have gone wrong in the original download but no such luck. I can get into safe mode but that is it

those series cards are known for having issues over time. Maybe you can bake in your oven, just do a thread search. But I would recommend replacing the card, given its age. What res are you wanting to run? What psu do you have?

Have you checked temps? Also, hossdaddy was saying something useful. There is a thread in the forums about people oven baking video card to ressurect em eith issues like you are describing.

He did tell you something useful. The 8800 series cards are dying left and right around now (about 3 years after release) and we have posts about 8800 series cards dying every week. He also asked about your PSU because that is another possibility for a source of problems.

Identify if the card is the issue by swapping in another videocard to see if the problems go away. If it is the card, there is not much you can do aside from trying to get an RMA through warranty from the manufacturer of your card or to try baking it in your oven to reflow it.

If it isn't the card, then it is something else in your system causing the instability and we would require more information but first of all you need to go and determine if it is the card at fault.

Oh sorry I did miss that. Yeah, the GTX series are the ones usually having problems but my G92 series card died recently as well.

If the heatsink is really clogged up, it might help to dissemble the shroud and give it a direct cleaning and re-application of thermal grease as well.

Good point, thermal grease especially the stock stuff loses some of its capability to transfer heat with age. Also I saw a guy with a similar artifacting problem and it turned out the Artic Silver grease he applied had eventually oozed out and 'shorted' out the GPU. Once he cleaned it off it started working fine again.

(It wasn't really shorting it but it does trap some power and add resistance if it makes contact with the pins so you have to be careful with that stuff)

Sorry didnt mean to be rude, just when someone said to stick my video card in the oven it sounded really sarcastic.

Res wise its not very high im only on a 19" NEC monitor. PSU is an antec 650 watt.

Ill try cleaning and possibly re doing thermal paste

Its cool, I know it sounded weird to me the first time I heard this too but the thread has a silly amount of pages to with successes with different types of cards.

this is a little late to revivie this thread i know, but does anyone know what the warrenty with BFG is on their cards, i made the mistake of not registering it but im sure i have original proof of purchase from tiger. also how far after the purchase is RMA still an option? Reason i ask is im gonna give this machine to my bro (he has an old dell laptop to game on) and i want him to have a working computer. All im taking from it is the HDD really and a optical drive so i might find a cheap hdd and optical drive to throw in it for him also for his bday present. I dont wana have to replace the card too though

All BFG graphics cards introduced on or after February 21, 2008 must be registered on www.bfgtech.com within thirty (30) calendar days of the original purchase date to activate the limited lifetime warranty or limited ten (10) year warranty. Products not properly registered will be covered from the date of purchase by a two (2) year warranty in Europe, and a one (1) year limited warranty in the U.S. and other countries. Proper registration includes submitting proof of purchase to BFG.

Since you didn't register your card, you only have a one year warranty from date of purchase unless it was bought before Feb. 21 2008. Why don't people register their cards? BFG has also left the videocard business but existing warranties still apply. Original proof of purchase means nothing. You could have stolen the card and still register it.
