So i was given this old box today, Gateway2000 Pentium 2 266mhz

tried to reformat, got all this weird code on the screen all symbols and numbers and letters, so i cleared CMOS, set bios back to defaults.

Now for some reason it doesn't see my HDD & CDROM, i've tried manualy entering the info for the HDD (C,H&S), no go, auto detect didn't work, IDE Removable didn't work...whats left to do?

Put in a boot floppy, tried FDISK, NO fixed drives are present ??? what the hell

I don't wanna have to update the bios if i don't have to, its too much crap to do just for this oldass computer.

Anyone know what else i can do?

Somehow the IDE controller is disabled. That's assuming you didn't touch the IDE cables or anything. You need to check the BIOS for any features related to that (look under Integrated Peripherals) and enable that IDE controller.

what should it be set on, there 4 options

Primary
Secondary
Both
Disabled

right now its on Both and its not picking up anything

yes the drive powers up

and i'll check the cable again

ok heres what happened

had a a single drive in there as a master, put it 2nd on the cable, put in another HDD on cable select

boot up, it sees both hard drives, i am currently formatting both, and plan to put 98 or Linux Red Hat on this system.

ok now when i put the cdrom 1st in boot order nothing happens when i have the windows98 cd in...

EDIT: I threw in a DVD rom i had laying around, its all working, installing win98 right now, thanks for the help guys :)
