Quite a while back I saw a few projects around the internet to turn a PATA CD drive into a stand alone CD player. Now I can only seem to find one crappy one.

I've googled:
cd drive player hack
cd drive player build
ata player hack
make player cd drive

And all possibilities in between. No luck. Does anyone have any links to something good?

What do you need to know?
Take a 12 AC to DC adapter, wire in a 7805 voltage regulator (to provide the +5 volt rail) and add a couple of RCA jacks.
Plug it all into the drive....Poof, done. :D

Of course the drive has to have more then just an eject button but I think that is a given.

Edit:
try the words:

cdrom drive player

Thats no problem

That is the problem. I want more controls and I don't want the audio coming from the faceplate 1/8" jack.

I did get better results with your google tip. Thanks.

I agree it's hard throwing them away, i usually donate mine or put them up on craigs list for who ever wants to pick them up. I learned to stop keeping all my old parts as they pile up so fast, there is a lady by us that builds computers for homeless and elderly people and she does it for free so i figure i can't go wrong with that.

I do the same thing with my old stuff.

I have always wanted to do that, but I dont think I have the room and I dont know where to get the parts I would need to get started. I am on disability myself and I know how much it helps to have a computer, I am lucky, I live with my sister who doesn't charge me alot for rent so I have enough money to build my own system and keep it up to date, but I still think it would be nice to help others out that are not as lucky as I am.

Could try putting a sign up in your yard or a ad on craigs list. I wouldn't want to deal with the tech support so i personally wouldn't deal with giving computers to them. But this lady is passionate about what she does, i should ask her where she gets all her parts from? Some of the mobos i gave her i wouldn't even want to try and get running they were so old.
