Hey guys sorry for the long read, hope you can actually get through it to provide some help.

I just switch to ubuntu 8.4 and i'm running wine .92, so I load up everest like i would always do and it show like for 4 stats as oposed to the normal 8-9. There is just proc speed, and utilization. I check and the temp monitors are not even being detected, my proc and hd temps are gone along with fan speeds! so i tried running coretemp .92, it detects my chip make and model but the temps are all fuged up!

Now the only thing that change is that I hooked up an old drive I got from another pc. It was a "salvage" pc from a company i work for, it still had the operating system installed. I booted with that drive as slave, just to take a peek. At that time i was running xp pro sp3, I noticed alot of the info from everest was not coming up but I had been having issues with my install.

I hooked up that drive cause I wanted to try some vista & xp 64 disk a friend of mine had given me. I also had 2x20gig IDE drives hooked up for backups that were working fine before i started messing around with the 64 bit systems.

At one point I had my 160 sata drive and that other drive hooked up, one of the vista 64 disk would not load, the xp 64 disk formatted the old HD but just kept looping. Then I tried the other vista disk and I can't remember what happened with that.

After all this one of the boot files got damaged from my xp partition, wanting to try ubuntu i installed it. i went through the whole partitioning/formatting section and wiped the xp partition, restarted but when i restarted just with the 160hd on it asked if i wanted to boot into the xp 32 or 64 system. Then it told me there was some windows disk management hardware issue when windows wasn't even installed anymore. After the second install that got it. But now i got all these weird ass issues, i have to use a jumper on one of the old drives to set it as slave and previously that wasn't the case, the other isn't even detected.

I loaded the "fail safe options" on my MB, but that hasn't changed anything, neither does using my old cmos settings for my OC i had running stable. I just can't help but feel that either the old HD or the windows disk i tried came with a nasty intruder.

Would flashing my bios even be a good idea? I mean the machine runs stable, also on everest the MB info is not coming up anymore.

Any options tips, and I really don't want to go back to xp to test things out.

bump!

Hmm so after installing a sensor applet in ubuntu it tells me there's no sensor's. I can see the processor temp and the fan speeds in the bios fine.

I did work with the pc hooked up to the power but turned off once, i don't think that would damage all the friggin sensors.

Sorry, I got a little lost reading through that. You're having problems reading your cpu temp in ubuntu (yes?). I don't know if programs like everest and the like work in linux over wine as I've never tried it before (though wine is up to version 1.0 now so I guess you could try that).

As for the sensor applet, it needs to use the coretemp module that comes with lm-sensors package, but it's not loaded by default in 8.04.

Do a "sudo modprobe coretemp", remove the sensor applet, then add it back, change the settings to use libsensors, and you should get cpu temps. Add "coretemp" to /etc/modules so it loads on every reboot.

Monitoring hard drives is done with hddtemp, which I believe is loaded by default.

For fan speeds, lm-sensors does the trick as well. You can run "sudo sensors-detect", then install the motherboard modules needed as it suggests, and run "sensors" from the terminal to get the readings. Don't know of a good gui applet/app for this though.
