Well new to the forum and looking to build a sff. I have checked out some threads but still undecided on what to get. My main purpose is to build a HTPC since i just got a lcd tv. Nothing fancy 32" 720p and now want to build something to go along side it.
The main points im looking for are stability and versatility. I want to back up all my dvds (tons of them) on to a hdd so i can sort them better than flipping through books of dvds to find the one i want. This is where I think a quad core could come in handy when im ripping them and converting them to the file type i want.
On the other hand i like to game from time to time and especially with the new ones coming out looking forward to try them out. dual core.
I think i would prefer dual as it runs cooler and takes less energy which is something to look for with sff. Would quad really benefit me if im just really using as stated above? Also if not overclocking would i be better off going with amd since they are cheaper or just going intel.

Second part is what video card to get? i dont think i would really need anything over the 4850 but anyone have any other suggestions? i dont think my tv can get past 1366x766 would even the 4850 be overkill?

sorry for the long post but really torn on what to do i keep building rigs on newegg and going back and forth. one day i will build a computer and push it to its limits but just not yet =P
 
Quad might be your best bet - AMD quad for better money. 9850/9950 = q6600.

You did not list your games.
 
well right now i have warhammer but really like fps. thinking about picking up farcry 2 when it comes out. i also play qw:et every once in awhile
 
*shrugs* 4850 might be worth it if you wanna throw it cash at it. Who knows what FC2 would require at that reso
 
It's really hard to beat the Intel chips, you *might* save a couple of bucks going the AMD route but in the end it's not really worth it. As for the video card, you'd probably get away with a 4670 (or the upcoming 4830) as it's all you really need for that resolution.
 
Quad cores are good if you want to burn/rip while doing other things at the same time like watching a movie, or playing a game or a number of other app uses all at once. Think heavy multitasking and thats where the quads shine over dual core. Now, if you only do one thing at a time then dual core is just fine.

Intel is king and most will tell you not to bother with AMD since clock for clock AMD still lags behind Intel. Also consider your future upgrade pathway. Existing Intel mobos usually take newer chips as they come out or simply need a BIOS update but AMD has lacked in that area in the last year or two. Those have been the two major reasons Intel has dominated. That and Intel has deeper pockets than AMD and has been able to wage pricing holy wars against AMD.
 
AMD is not bad for the price, especially in their dual core processors (those are real cheap and some run pretty fast) but for all out performance I would pick an Intel. An E8400 for example is 3.0GHz and is not that expensive either.
 
There will be no future chips for the LGA775 so the argument of upgrade-ability is invalid/void.
 
Well it's not really invalid if you hop on an E7200 and scoop up a Q9650 sometime in the future.
 
Agreed, S775 chips (esp. quad cores) will be around for a LONG time. Look at how long it took Intel to phase out the S478 parts, S775 will be even longer.
 
Yeah I plan on sticking with LGA775 for a while now. I'm sure in addition to the price coming down on Nehalem taking a while I'm sure the "trickle down" will take a while for the good stuff to show up in uATX form factor. Although who knows, I heard somewhere that Intel is making a push in that direction.
