Im looking at getting a new 22inch monitor for gaming / movie viewing for about $400 aus and i cant decided between 22” Chimei 221D-5ms , 22” Acer AL2216WD-5ms DVI WS / Benq FP222W-5ms DVI WS or the 22” Viewsonic VX2235WM-5ms DVI Wide Screen. From what i understand only the acer one is hdcp which i will need for blu ray / hd dvd in vista. So im kind of leaning towards the acer one... anyone got any input? Im currently using a viewsonic vx2025wm but thats gonna go to a family member as a hand down once i get a new one :D.

Basically my choices are

22” V7 R22W02-AA 5ms DVI Wide Screen Speakers $335
22” Proview FP2226AFW-5ms 2xSub-D DVI WS $355
22” Chimei 221D-5ms DVI Wide Screen $375
22” Acer AL2216WD-5ms DVI WS/Benq FP222W-5ms DVI WS (both $399 each)
22” Viewsonic VX2235WM-5ms DVI Wide Screen $409

I've been looking at all of these 22" models, and the best advice I can give is to go check them out with your own eyes. I did this recently, and everything from the chimei to the sceptre to the HP appeared to be within a 10% margin of quality difference, at least in my eyes. I thought the chimei would be horrible given the kind of nitpicking on this forum, but it looked totally acceptable, at least in my judgement.

Im just leaning towards the acer coz it seems to have gotten decent reviews and its hdcp for down the road when hd dvd / blu ray etc take off.

My wife has the Chimei and it's actually pretty nice.. there is a little backlight bleed, but for the price, it's not bad at all....

I have the black Chimei 22" and I love it. I bought it from Newegg about 6 months ago when it was on sale for $300, I think you can get it now for around $250. I have actually been thinking about picking up a second one - still debating on buying the 37" Westinghouse instead.

Pros:
No dead pixels
No ghosting in games like DoD:Source, FEAR, Oblivion, STALKER, GRAW
Great color reproduction and brightness - makes my 19" CRT image look like ass

Cons:
Small amount of back light bleed on the top and bottom - I've read that most 22"ers suffer from this same thing, but it's hardly noticeable
The stand sucks - I have mine wall-mounted anyway
Adjustment controls are somewhat cumbersome - but once you get it calibrated, you'll never have to touch them again

It's a great monitor and probably the cheapest of the bunch.

just bought a HP W2207 last night...

311$ at circuit city with a 10% off coupon.

its a good looking monitor, and the stands rotation ability is what i wanted, as well as a built in USB 2.0

i still havent configured it much yet, some text looks like it has sharp points.

overall, very nice. the pictures arent the greatest, but they are good for reference

If i went with the acer , i wouldnt be going backwards would i? lol i dont wanna get a monitor and give my family mine if mines better. I cant find the hp w2207 in aus... and the chimei isnt hdcp is it?

Im not in the us tho :(. I was just looking at the dell ones Dell E228WFP 22" Entry Wide Screen Flat Panel LCD Monitor 22" Wide Screen with Analog / Digital DVI-D (HDCP) for $500 aus.... abit more than i was planning but is it worth it?

um a 22" wouldnt really be a step up from your 2025 but if you want to, the HP looks the best.

I cant get the hp in aus lol >.< And im getting new 1 for free and giving my 2025 as a hand down to a family member. Is the dell one any good? sounds good on paper.

well jeez if im going $500 for the dell should i just got $525 for the samsung 226BW and hope i get a good panel?

Seems like we mainly have a / c panels here in aus..... should i go with the dell or are the a/c panels still ok?

nice!! $37! ive read that you can calibrate the a / c pretty easy , mind sharing your settings just encase i lose the lotto?

Well with my birthday coming up i might be able to score a dell 2407wfp.... how odes this go for gaming? im just abit worried about the response times... 16 ms (black to white) / 6 ms (grey to grey)

Take a look at this, some of the tests may give you a better idea.

Thanks , nice link the 226bw looks better but the problem is i bet that was done on the s panel.... all the places ive emailed in aus seem to have the c panels.

I have the 226bw samsung (C Panel). I went ahead and bought a spyder2express calibration tool and I am very happy. After calibration, the colors are fantastic and very clear. My UT2004 game looks awsome. Also, I used the tool on my previous monitor (after seeing what it did to the widescreen). My samsung 930b (I think that is the model) never looked better :)

I would say this monitor runs pretty good with limited banding as it is set now.

I did have to enforce vsync at the nvidia control panel though to keep from screen tear in high def (720) quicktime movies and some games. But I dont' see where this is keeping me back at all.

I like that the screen isn't glossy (one reason I didn't go with the HP w2207). I don't want the extra glare on the screen.

Calibration using the spyder doesn't affect the colours in games, does it? I though that the profiles don't get used in games.

they are calibrated in games if you do it rhough the monitor itself.

Yeah, but if one was to get a monitor just for gaming there'd be no point buying a calibration tool like the Spyder2Express because it won't make a difference in games, right?

It works in some games and not in others, just depends on which game.
